“𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞” is an 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐲 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞. Its origins in American English appear to be an imitation of broken or pidgin English, and despite its ungrammaticality, it is widely accepted as a fixed expression. 😮

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐭, "I knew he had recognized me. When we rode up to him he said: '𝐺𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔. 𝐿𝑜𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑛𝑜 𝑠𝑒𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢.' 🤔

On the other hand, ‘𝐍𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨’ is a very informal way of saying that you cannot do something that you have been asked to do. 🙄

According to the feminist blog Bustle, seemingly harmless phrases including “𝐧𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨” and “𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞” are actually terribly racist and so we must stop using them “immediately.” 😲😲😲

Basically, the idea is that these two phrases are considered racist because they originated from Westerners mocking what’s called “𝐩𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡,” which are forms of English that immigrants (Chinese) have used to make it easier for them to communicate in America. 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️👍

For example, on February 1, the White House announced that it was hoping to spend $1 billion on a 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭. The same day, Alphabet (the company formerly known as Google) released rare financial information on 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐬. Neither the government nor Alphabet is heading to the moon, however! 🤔🤔🤔
