New Publication | DBSES Research Spotlight πΏ
A newly published study in Phytotaxa describes Corybas apoensis, a new species of helmet orchid endemic to Mt. Apo Natural Park, Philippines. It closely resembles C. viridisepalus from New Guinea but is distinctive for its white floral background and dorsal sepal with densely papillate abaxial surface.
The discovery of Corybas apoensis increases the number of recognized Corybas species in the Philippines to 10, with only two species currently known from Mindanao. Found exclusively in the mossy forests and peat-like grasslands of Mt. Apo at elevations of 2,100β2,479 m, the species is currently known from a single locality and is proposed to be classified as Critically Endangered, highlighting the urgent need to protect its fragile mountain habitat.
The Department of Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies (DBSES) proudly congratulates our Teaching Assistant and current MS Biology student, Kier C. Agad, together with his co-authors, on this significant contribution to Philippine plant taxonomy and biodiversity conservation. We are proud to celebrate another milestone in scientific discovery from our growing community of young researchers.
Congratulations, Kier and co-authors!

What to Wear with the Sablay?
As we prepare for the University of the Philippines Mindanao's 28th Commencement Exercises, graduates are encouraged to wear attire that complements the dignity and symbolism of the Sablay.
For a classic and formal look, choose tops or dresses in ecru, beige, or cream shades, paired with black trousers, skirts, or slacks. Formal shoes in neutral tones or black are recommended, while accessories should be kept minimal to maintain the Sablay as the focal point of your academic attire.
Wear your Sablay with pride as you celebrate your achievements and carry forward honor, excellence, and service.
