𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 | 𝐔𝐈𝐂 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐗𝐑𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐗𝐑𝐅 𝐋𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞/𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠

On May 29, 2026, select Bachelor of Science in Chemistry students from the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) participated in a specialized, one-day lecture and training focused on the basic principles and mechanisms of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) led by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The event offered attendees hands-on experience, allowing them to analyze soil and pharmaceutical samples using the Fenix eXaminart XRD and a high-precision XRF Spectrometer to identify the unique mineral structures and elemental compositions present within the tested samples. The event concluded with a post-activity session where attendees plotted raw data from previous XRD analysis to accurately identify various mineral present.

The training was led by Engr. Rica Jan C. Ondoy, MSc, from the Department of Chemical Engineering & Technology at MSU-IIT. Engr. Ondoy brought a wealth of industry and research expertise to the lecture, having previously served as a Failure Analysis Engineer at Toshiba Philippines. She was also a DOST-SEI MS Graduate Fellow hosted by DOST Davao Region under Project Geotechnologies for Mineral and Environmental Laboratory and Research Center (GemLAB).

This event was a joint initiative between the DOST and the UIC Science Resource Center (SRC). Through cutting-edge partnerships like this, the UIC BS Chemistry program continues to demonstrate its commitment to industry-ready education by providing students with direct access to advanced analytical instrumentation and top-tier experts, ensuring its graduates are equipped to lead in scientific research and technological innovation.
