Here are 3 biblical ways to raise emotionally intelligent children, each with a practical real-life example.
1. Teach them to recognize and express their emotions honestly before God.
“Trust in him at all times… pour out your heart before him.” — Psalm 62:8
Real-life scenario:
Your 5-year-old loses a game and starts crying.
Instead of saying, “Stop crying. You’re okay.”
Say:
“I can see you’re disappointed because you wanted to win. It’s okay to feel sad. Let’s tell God how you feel and ask Him to help your heart.”
Lesson: Children learn that feelings are real, but they don’t have to control their actions.

2. Correct with gentleness instead of anger.
“Fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” — Ephesians 6:4
Real-life scenario:
Your child accidentally spills milk all over the dining table.
Instead of shouting,
“You’re always so careless!”
Say,
“Accidents happen. Let’s clean it together. Next time, carry your cup with both hands.”
Lesson: The child learns responsibility without shame and develops emotional security.
⸻
3. Model forgiveness, humility, and self-control.
“Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another…” — Ephesians 4:32
Real-life scenario:
You lose your temper and raise your voice.
Later, you kneel beside your child and say,
“Daddy/Mommy was wrong for yelling. Will you forgive me? I’m asking God to help me speak more kindly.”
Your child sees that even adults make mistakes, take responsibility, and seek forgiveness.
Lesson: Children imitate what parents model more than what parents merely teach.
Remember:
Emotionally intelligent children are not children who never cry or never get angry. They are children who learn to:
1. Recognize their emotions.
2. Respond in a godly way.
3. Respect the emotions of others.
When parents consistently model these biblical principles, children grow not only in emotional maturity but also “in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52).
