This Christmas season, the ASES joyfully comes together to give back to the community and share the true spirit of the holidays. Through acts of kindness, shared laughter, and meaningful connections, we celebrate love, compassion, and unity.

May this yuletide celebration remind us that the greatest gift of all is togetherness and the joy of giving. ๐ŸŽ„โค๏ธ

๐‘จ๐’ƒ๐’ƒ๐’† ๐’…๐’† ๐‘ณโ€™๐‘ฌ๐’‘๐’†๐’†, a French Catholic priest, founded the first social and religious association for deaf people around 1750. Lโ€™Epeeโ€™s full name was Abbe Charles Michel de Lโ€™Epee and he was one of the most important people in the history of sign language.

A common story retold throughout the history of sign language claims that Lโ€™Epee encountered two deaf sisters by chance when visiting a poverty stricken area of Paris. Their mother wanted him to educate her daughters in religion. After discovering their deafness, he wanted to educate the sisters. Soon after, he completely dedicated his life to educating the deaf.

Abbe Charles Michel de Lโ€™Epee established the first public free deaf school in 1771. This school is now called Institut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris (or the National Institute for Deaf Children of Paris). In English, the school was originally known as the National Institute for Deaf-Mutes. Deaf children came from all across France to attend the school. The deaf children had signed at home then brought these signs with them to the school. Lโ€™Epee learned all of these different signs and utilized the signs he learned to teach his students French.

These signs soon became a standard signed language Lโ€™Epee taught to the students. More schools were founded and the students brought this language back to their neighborhoods. The standard language Lโ€™Epee used is known as Old French Sign Language. This language spread across Europe as more students were educated.

Today, Abbe de Lโ€™Epee is known in Deaf history as the โ€œ๐…๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ƒ๐ž๐š๐Ÿโ€ because of the twenty-one schools he established and all he has done for the deaf.

Basic Signs for Everyday Communication

In celebration of Deaf Awareness Month, we continue our journey into the world of Sign Languageโ€”where every gesture builds a bridge of understanding. Today, we focus on basic signs that help us connect, express care, and foster inclusivity in our daily interactions.

Learning simple signs like hello, thank you, sorry, and help teaches us that communication is not limited by voiceโ€”it is enriched by empathy, intention, and respect. Each sign is a step toward a more inclusive community, where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

May these basic signs inspire us to listen with our eyes, speak with our hands, and connect with our hearts.

Together, letโ€™s continue creating spaces where accessibility is celebrated, diversity is honored, and communication knows no bounds.

The Alphabet in Signs

In honour of Deaf Awareness Month, we shine a light on the richness, depth, and culture of the Deaf community. Sign language reminds us that communication goes far beyond spoken words, it is movement, emotion, and connection woven together through the hands and the heart.

As we learn and master the alphabet in Sign Language, we also learn to appreciate the stories, identities, and lived experiences of the Deaf community. May this month inspire us to foster inclusivity, amplify awareness, and strengthen our commitment to accessibility for all.

Let us continue breaking barriers, embracing diversity, and celebrating the silent strength that unites us. In every gesture lies a message of respect, empowerment, and humanity.
