This Womenโs Month, the Coleoptera Research Center highlights three Philippine-endemic weevils named after remarkable Filipina women whose legacies have helped shape science and conservation in the country.
These species reflect the impact of women in advancing our understanding and protection of biodiversity:
1. ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ฅ๐ค๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ฉ๐ช๐จ (๐๐ง๐๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ฉ๐ช๐จ) ๐๐๐ก๐ฉ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐๐ โ honoring National Scientist Dr. Clare R. Baltazar, widely regarded as the โMother of Philippine Entomology,โ for her pioneering contributions to entomological research in the Philippines.
2. ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ฅ๐ค๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ฉ๐ช๐จ (๐๐ง๐ฉ๐๐ค๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ฉ๐ช๐จ) ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ก๐ค๐ฅ๐๐ฏ๐๐ โ named after Sec. Gina Lopez, former DENR Secretary and environmental champion, for her strong advocacy for environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.
3. ๐๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ฎ๐ฃ๐๐๐ช๐จ ๐๐ฃ๐๐ก๐ฎ๐ฃ๐๐ โ named after Dr. Analyn A. Cabras, known among colleagues as the โQueen of Philippine weevils,โ in recognition of her work advancing beetle research and conservation, particularly within the tribe Pachyrhynchini.
Through taxonomy, these species names become lasting tributes. They recognize women whose dedication continues to shape science, inspire discovery, and advance conservation.
