The name Dumagat refers to a tribe of semi-nomadic people living in the coastal areas of Luzon, Philippines. The closest English translation of the name would be sea-dwellers or sea gypsies. The name rings nice and goes with our desire to always be by the sea.

This ghost net got caught at depth on our fixed marker buoy line where we tie in for our depth training sessions. It could easily have drifted over both of our deep dive lines during the session. Luckily, we spotted it from the surface and were able to cut it free and bring it back for proper disposal.

For those who haven’t been taught to carry a knife or cutting tool, along with a signaling device on the freediving buoy, take note. While this is the first time we’ve encountered something like this at our training site, the risk of a net or line getting caught on your dive setup is very real.

Not only did we prevent a potentially dangerous situation, we may have also saved a turtle, a whale, or countless fish from entanglement. This wouldn’t have been possible without a knife. Dive safe, always.
