๐ฐIn recent times, some subjects and issues truly deserve our spotlight. In this piece, let us turn our attention to one of our nationโs greatest natural guardians: the Great Wall of Luzon, also known as the majestic Sierra Madre. ๐ค๐

Given its significant geographic presence, Sierra Madre, which translates to "mother of mountains" in Spanish, is frequently referred to as the backbone of Luzon. The Sierra Madre mountain range, spanning over approximately 540 kilometers and rising to 6,283 feet, is known as Luzonโs natural fortress, serving as the Philippinesโ primary protection against calamities brought by climate change, especially destructive tropical cyclones. However, illegal logging and deforestation are threatening this vital role.
Despite Sierra Madreโs valuable role for the nation, many Filipinos are ignorant of how much their safety and daily lives rely on its preservation. Every year, the mountain range takes the brunt of storms that would otherwise damage provinces, protecting millions of people from flash floods, landslides, and fatal winds. Its forests also support various types of biodiversity, including unique species as well as waterways that provide drinking water and irrigate crops. Once these forests are damaged, the consequences will appear: rivers silt up, people become more exposed and vulnerable to disasters, and the ecosystems that support local livelihoods gradually collapse. As dangers increase, so does the need to protect, defend, and preserve the shield that silently protects Luzon.
As environmental issues intensify, the need to amplify awareness about Sierra Madreโs role is crucial. Too often, we only recognize its worth once calamities strike, when it weakens a typhoon, and when it prevents certain communities from flooding. However, conserving Sierra Madre must not be a seasonal nor occasional concern; rather, it should be a shared obligation and responsibility based on mutual understandings of the Filipino people. By educating more people about mountain ranges' crucial role in our safety, environment, and future, we may inspire stronger activism, demand better environmental precautions, and urge people to voice out regarding this national crisis. Understanding and awareness are the first steps toward actionโthe action that Sierra Madre critically needs.
Yet awareness should not end with individual concern and opinions; it must also expose the gaps in government action. Programs aimed at Sierra Madreโs protection have suffered from ineffective enforcement and inconsistent regulations. When the government fails to take action on these concerns, the environment shoulders the burden of the consequences. Calling attention to these shortcomings is not to be confrontational or aggressive; it is to be assertive. It is not to โpoint fingersโ for someone to take the blame, but to advocate for stronger initiatives that match Sierra Madreโs importance and value.
Moreover, conserving the Sierra Madre is a common mission in which everyone in the country may participate, not only persons in authority or environmental groups. Once awareness is spread nationwide, individuals will develop the ability to speak up and demand for improvement, acknowledge the value of the mountain range, and be the voice for the silenced defenders of Sierra Madre. It has served as a long-term shield, and now it is our duty to protect it. Empowerment begins with awareness and education, which leads to hope and responsibility of preserving the extraordinary backbone of Luzon for its future generationsโthe future generations that will stand for Sierra Madreโs serenity.
