Today, we commemorate Benigno โ€œNinoyโ€ Aquino Jr., a prominent opposition leader during the period of Martial Law (1972โ€“1981). He was assassinated on August 21, 1983, upon his return from exile. His death sparked widespread public outrage, strengthened the growing resistance against the Marcos regime, and contributed to the historic People Power Revolution of 1986, which restored democracy in the Philippines.

Under Republic Act No. 9256, August 21 is observed as a special non-working holiday in recognition of Ninoy Aquinoโ€™s sacrifice and his significant role in the struggle for freedom and democracy.

His legacy continues to remind us of the power of courage, sacrifice, and love for country:
