One bullet was all it took.

Every August 21, the Philippines remembers Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a senator, journalist, and vocal critic of the Marcos dictatorship whose assassination on August 21, 1983, became a turning point in the country’s history.

But more than four decades later, remembering Ninoy should mean more than posting his portrait, sharing a quote, and moving on with the day.

History matters most when it forces us to look at the present. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲? These questions remain relevant today. Headlines continue to carry stories of violence, allegations of corruption, public distrust, and political conflicts where winning an argument can sometimes seem more important than understanding who bears the consequences. History may belong to the past, but the problems it warns us about can return when people stop paying attention.

“𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨,” Ninoy once said. Perhaps that is one lesson worth carrying beyond August 21: democracy asks something from each of us.

Not everyone will make history in grand or dramatic ways. But everyone can care enough to ask questions, seek the truth, speak when something is wrong, listen even when opinions differ, stand against injustice, and refuse to become comfortable with indifference.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁, 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗦𝗚 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘀’ 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲-𝗼𝗳𝗳

Kainit, pero abante!

Neither the high heat index, packed venue, shortage of chairs, nor a sudden blackout could stop JRMSU-Main Supreme Student Government (SSG) candidates from facing the student body as they laid down their platforms and final campaign pro-stude pitches during the Miting de Avance yesterday, August 19.

Students packed the University Covered Court, spilling toward the sides and back of the court, while many sat cross-legged on the floor as SG candidates presented their plans for student welfare, campus activities, and representation.

Despite the sweltering conditions, the crowd stayed put, turning the avance into a test not only of the candidates’ platforms but also of everyone’s endurance.

The heat intensified as the program went on before a sudden power interruption briefly cut the candidates’ speeches and relief from electric fans.

When electricity returned, the face-off resumed, with the candidates pressing forward with their final appeals to student-voters.

Student Electoral Commission Chief Jay Rald Natuel urged students to look beyond names and popularity and carefully weigh the candidates seeking to represent them.

“As students, we have the right to choose. But more importantly, we have the responsibility to choose wisely,” Natuel said. “We are not merely choosing a name on a ballot. We are choosing a person who will carry our voice.”

Unopposed presidential candidate Prince Sopia Pao, meanwhile, pledged a student government anchored on transparency, inclusivity, accessibility, and stronger representation.

“I believe that our student government can do more. We can be more responsive, more accessible, more transparent, and most importantly, more connected to every student,” Pao said, vowing “to make sure that no student is left uninformed, unheard, or forgotten.”

For freshman Francis Dave Carumba of the College of Liberal Arts, Mathematics, and Sciences, enduring the heat was part of hearing firsthand what the candidates had to offer.

“Mura jud sya’g gisulod mi’g oven ato nga time. Okay ra pud kay nibalik ra dayon ang kuryente,” Carumba said.

Beyond the discomfort, Carumba said the Miting de Avance gave students a responsibility that extends to election day.

“This is not about who is popular but who is responsible. I want the student body to vote wisely kay para ra man pud sya sa kaugmaon sa university and sa student body,” he added.

𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗔𝘄 𝟭𝟭

During ISF, the seats here may be full, but spirit always brings JRMSUans to their feet.

This is where colleges collide in friendly rivalry, 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗼 echoes across the grounds, and 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗹𝗹 turns ordinary voices into “𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗻𝗮 𝗸𝗼𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗴 𝘂𝗴𝗺𝗮!” energy.

But wait: 𝘐𝘚𝘍 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘢 𝘣𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥? 𝘋𝘪𝘭𝘪 𝘶𝘺. On regular days, you might find students rehearsing like the performance is tomorrow, 𝙠𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙜𝙮𝙪𝙙 𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙮, or groups claiming their favorite corner for practice, meetings, chika, and the classic “𝘎𝘶𝘺𝘴, 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘢 𝘵𝘢!” followed by another 20 minutes of chika.

And then there’s CCJE and other studes. For some, the Grandstand means cheers and performances; for CCJE and ubang students, it can mean something much more serious: exam time. The same place that shakes with "𝘓𝘈𝘉𝘈𝘕!" suddenly becomes so quiet you can almost hear someone thinking, “𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥, 𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪 𝘬𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘪 𝘯𝘨𝘢 𝘯𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳.”

Through celebrations, competitions, examinations, rehearsals, victories, and "𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦" that is never actually the last, the Grandstand has witnessed generations of JRMSUans show up, stand together, and give their all.

Whether you come here to cheer, compete, perform, rehearse, take an exam, or simply watch from the stands, remember: someday, an ordinary moment here might become one of the memories you miss the most.

Welcome freshies, where your first semester begins with brand-new notebooks, freshly ironed uniforms, complete highlighters, correction tape, sticky notes, ug “this is my era” energy.

First sem murag Dora the Explorer, asking guards for directions.

Walks in with brand-new notebooks, freshly ironed uniforms, and that “this is my era” energy.

Nalilito sila sa building areas and room number, pero they walk with confidence as if they know where they’re going. They are overly prepared, dala tanan like ballpen, highlighter, correction tape, sticky notes, murag ready for war.
