Forward striker Christian Sanchez struck two crucial penalties after a 0-0 standstill to edge Asenso Oroquieta FC in a nerve-wracking shootout, and carry Tiago FC to a third place victory, 2-1, in the Men’s Open Category of the Asenso Plaridel Invitational Football Tournament at the Plaridel Sports Complex, Misamis Occidental, September 6.

Competing against 9 other teams in the 8-a-side football field, the Dapitan-based squad proved their tactical discipline, earning a spot on the podium alongside home teams Plaridel United Football Club (PUFC) Legendaries and Plaridel United Football Club( PUFC) Avengers despite being outplayed by the Avengers during the semi-finals, 0-1.

After a scoreless 0–0 regulation during the fight for third game against Oroquieta FC, the match went straight to a high‑stakes three‑kicker penalty shootout where Sanchez converted two decisive strikes and held firm defensively to edge out Oroquieta FC, sealing a thrilling 2–1 victory.

“I stayed focused, and tried not to think too much about the pressure. In my mind, I treated it like just another penalty during practice. I trusted myself, trusted my teammates, and most importantly, trusted the training we had put in. When I kicked the ball and saw it go in, I felt a huge sense of relief and happiness,” Sanchez stressed in an interview.

He recounted approaching the penalty spot with calm focus, reminding himself to trust the training, stay composed, and execute what he had practiced, and after converting the shot and later saving a penalty as goalkeeper, he felt immense relief and joy, emphasizing that the result was not just about him but about teamwork, trust, and the guidance of his teammates and coach who believed in him.

Heading into the high-pressure shootout, another team member, Flitz Jhann Borres, revealed that the team stayed composed by sticking to their core preparation and coach's guidance.

"Pag-abot penalty shoot out ni ingon among coach ug kami as a team nga kailangan jud namo ni ma daog and ug unsa to amo mga patid shoot out sa training dapat mao ra gyapon ang amoa himo-on inig abot sa tournament," Borres shared, emphasizing that ex*****on and sticking to their routine made the difference.

Borres explained that maintaining consistency against tough competition required sticking to their coach’s instructions and relying on strong mutual understanding on the pitch to achieve their desired outcome.

The tournament was spearheaded through the leadership of Mayor Gadwin E. Handumon, supported by SK Federation President Kenneth Jhester Pelera Haim, and the Municipal Health Office (MHO) to promote sports development and participant safety.

“JRMSU'TIAGO FC played with its own distinctive style of football. We dominated most of the matches but were unable to convert our chances into goals. With our team captain Lawrence Frank C. Mendoza unable to participate, we lacked a striker, yet the team still managed to create excellent plays. That's football. We will come back stronger,” Mr. Antonio M. Buca, team coach, declared.

Oroquieta FC settled for fourth while host squad, PUFC Legendaries, claimed the championship title as PUFC Avengers took home second place.

JRMSU Tiago’s penalty clutch performance etched an undeniable mark on the tournament, hopeful for another podium in 2026 football season in Mindanao.

‘𝗕𝗜𝗗𝗔 𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗔’

𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆

Reinforcing the drive to build a culture of preparedness and safety, Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) -Main conducted its 3rd Quarter Earthquake Drill at the University Field, 4 PM today, September 10.

The University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Services (UDRRMS) led the drill, guiding students, faculty, and staff through evacuation procedures and safety protocols.

“Since it is done in every quarter, there is always a room for improvement… and that is to capacitate the entire JRMSU to have a culture of safety in preparation to any disaster to come,” said UDRRMS Director Dr. Victor B. Bernido.

Dr. Bernido emphasized that “life saving is not only a one person’s concern, but it is all throughout the entire community.”

For JRMSUans, the drill was a reminder of their role in modeling preparedness.

“Thankful mi nga naay inana nga panghitabo [earthquake drill] para ma-aware mi unsay buhaton if naay mga kalamidad… and kami as a student, mag-set mi as example sa uban nga mao diay na gam-on,” BS Nursing sophomore Jorenee Mariae Arvil Nomo shared.

JRMSU has consistently staged earthquake drills each quarter, identifying areas for improvement in evacuation speed and coordination.

The 4th quarter earthquake drill is set for December, featuring real-based scenarios and enhanced simulations to further test the university’s readiness.

“We wanted to do more on education and campaign para masaisip, salita, at gawa sa mga studyante,” Dr. Bernido added.

“Bida ang handa,” the director concluded, urging JRMSUans to carry the lessons of the drill into everyday life.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝗦𝗚 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘅𝘆 𝘃𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻

Vowing to make student leadership felt beyond programs and positions, newly inducted Supreme Student Government (SSG) President Prince Sopia S. Pao pledged to put JRMSUans and their stories at the center of her administration as she formally assumed office for Academic Year 2026–2027, September 4.

“Let us remember that behind every number in a student population is a person with a story, and that is why our leadership must be more than visible, it must be felt. Lagi’t lagi para sa JRMSUans,” Pao said during her acceptance speech at the SSG Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony.

Pao stressed that the SSG presidency is not merely a title or ceremonial role but a responsibility to serve and respond to the needs of the student body.

The ceremony formally installed the newly elected SSG, Student Government (SG), and organization officers, marking the transition of student leadership and the beginning of their responsibility to represent students and work with the university administration on campus concerns and initiatives.

Campus Director Dr. Patrick G. Galleto reminded the new officers that their responsibility extends beyond holding positions, describing them as a vital link between students and the administration.

“As you assume your respective roles, remember that you are the bridge between the student body and the campus administration. We look to you to bring us your ideas, concerns, and aspirations,” Galleto said.

He further urged the officers to inspire their fellow students to aim higher, excel academically, contribute to the campus community, and strive to become better individuals.

University President Dr. Maria Rio Abdon-Naguit, meanwhile, challenged the incoming leaders to transform the SSG into an organization that goes beyond conducting activities and instead responds directly to student and campus needs.

“I also challenge you to make the Supreme Student Government of JRMSU more than an organization that conducts activities and programs; make it an organization that listens, responds, and helps solve problems,” Dr. Naguit said.

Naguit also called on the student leaders to promote environmental responsibility across the Main Campus and influence fellow JRMSUans through their actions.

The University President administered the oath of office to the incoming SSG, SG, and organization officers before the ceremonial turnover of leadership.

The Key of Responsibilities was passed from the outgoing administration of SSG President Jeffrey Carbonila to Pao’s administration, with outgoing SSG Vice President Arah Arellano facilitating the turnover.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jay D. Telen closed the ceremony, expressing hope that AY 2026–2027 would bring meaningful initiatives, programs, activities, and projects with lasting impact on the Main Campus studentry.

With the oath taken and the symbolic key passed, Pao and the new SSG administration now face the test behind their promise: turning a leadership that is seen into one that every JRMSUan can feel.

By virtue of Republic Act No. 11370, every 8th of September is marked as a special working holiday nationwide, in celebration of the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today calls us to gratitude and reflection, that success is not about recognition, but about living with integrity, compassion, and purpose. May we embrace challenges with perseverance, carry our responsibilities with sincerity, and extend kindness through service to others, as every new beginning is a chance to grow, to serve, and to love.

Let us celebrate this day not only in prayer, but in action, by choosing compassion as our way of life.
