APA vs MLA: The key differences

APA and MLA are two of the most commonly used citation styles.

- The APA manual (published by the American Psychological Association) is mostly used in social science and education fields.

- The MLA handbook (published by the Modern Language Association) is mostly used in humanities fields.

Citations look slightly different in each style, with different rules for things like title capitalization, author names, and placement of the date.

There are also some differences in layout and formatting.

In 𝑨𝑷𝑨 7𝒕𝒉 𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, when citing 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, the in-text citation includes all sources in the same set of brackets, 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. Separate the citations with 𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐢-𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐬.

Example:

There is an established consensus that the current trend toward a warming climate is directly linked to human activity (Hegerl, 1996; Leviticus et al., 2017; NASA, n.d.; Robinson et al., 2014; Santer et al., 2003).

The present perfect continuous is often used in these ways:

1) recent past activities
2) one event which is still continuing
3) repeated events continuing up to now
