Showing excellence in both scientific inquiry and educational research, four (4) student researchers from the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Science (BSEd-Science) program under the College of Education secured First Place (Best Research) in two distinct categories during the University-Wide Undergraduate Research Forum 2026, held on June 11, 2026.
Anchored on the theme, "Innovative Research for Sustainable Futures and Resilient Communities," the forum brought together undergraduate researchers from the various colleges of Mindanao State University-Maguindanao to showcase scholarly works that address real-world challenges and contribute to sustainable development. The event highlighted the crucial role of research in generating knowledge, fostering innovation, and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In Session 1: Sustainable Livelihoods, Agriculture, and Local Economies, the study entitled โEvaluation of Antidiabetic, Antimicrobial, and Cytotoxic Activities of Ethanolic Extract from Cyperus iria Linn.โ was awarded First Place (Best Research). By exploring its medicinal properties, the research supports the sustainable utilization of indigenous biological resources, which may serve as a foundation for future community-based health products, value-added agricultural initiatives, and local economic opportunities.
The student researchers are Roden C. Agudaรฑa, Alma A. Esmail, Mohaima Z. Makalilay, and Nasrudin M. Sarip, guided by their adviser, Dr. Rolly James F. Cheng, and co-adviser, Ms. Fatnahada M. Sha. The team likewise acknowledges the support of DOST-PCHRD through its Undergraduate Thesis Grant Program.
Likewise, in Session 4: Education, Innovation, and Inclusive Learning, the study โDimensions of Teaching Effectiveness in Science Education Across Content, Instruction, Context, and Assessmentโ also earned First Place (Best Research). The study examined key dimensions of effective science instruction and generated insights that may help improve educational practice and learner outcomes. This supports the ongoing efforts to strengthen teaching quality and advance educational excellence.
The study was conducted by Mohaima Z. Makalilay and Nasrudin M. Sarip under the supervision of their research adviser, Dr. Rolly James F. Cheng.
These back-to-back feats demonstrate the breadth of research excellence within the BSEd-Science program, from natural products research to science education. The entire College of Education family and the Science Department Faculty proudly celebrate these accomplishments, which reflect the commitment of the college to research, innovation, and academic excellence. This also underlines the important role of future science educators not only as teachers but also as researchers who generate evidence-based knowledge for the benefit of society.
