Philippine Students Win Big at the 22nd IMSO in Malaysia
The Philippine delegation made the nation proud after clinching a total of 2 Gold, 7 Silver, and 10 Bronze medals, along with 1 Special Award in Science, at the 22nd International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary School Students (22nd IMSO).
This yearโs competition was held from October 5 to 10, 2025, in Alor Setar, Kedah, Malaysia, and was jointly organized by the Kedah State Education Department and Albukhary International University. Over 650 delegates, including more than 350 student participants from 23 countries and territories, took part in the event.
Leading the Philippine medalists were Wilzent Brian Lim (Grade 6, Pangasinan Universal Institute, Mathematics Division) and Leonard Vash Cay (Grade 6, Xavier School Nuvali, Science Division), who both struck Gold.
Leonard Vash Cay's performance also stood out by claiming one of the 6 special awards, earning him the Overall Best in Theory Award in the Science Division (this award is given to the student with thehighest theory score among all Science participants). This makes him the only Filipino to receive a special award this year. This is a major achievement, as the other top Science awards (Overall Champion and Best in Experiment) went to two students from Singapore, while in Mathematics, two students from Singapore (Overall Champion and Best in Theory) and one from Thailand (Best in Exploration) claimed all three special awards. โ definitely a major achievement in this highly competitive field.

The IMSO stands out as one of the worldโs most prestigious competitions for primary students, challenging young learners through a combination of theoretical and practical problem-solving rounds. The Mathematics Division includes short-answer and essay tests along with an exploration component focused on puzzles and logical reasoning. The Science Division features two theory exams and one practical experiment, encouraging both knowledge and scientific inquiry.
This yearโs event brought together participants from Bangladesh, Botswana, Bulgaria, China, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
The Philippine delegation was led by Mr. Renard Eric Chua and Mr. Joel Edward Cardinal for the Mathematics Division, and Mr. Ivan Lawrence Aguilar and Mr. Jay Gabata for the Science Division.
