ELEVATING PINEAPPLE INNOVATION: UCN – QPRDI MEETS DOST – ITDI

On June 16, 2026, the University of Camarines Norte Vice President Conference Room hosted a high-level collaborative meeting between the University of Camarines Norte (UCN) and the Department of Science and Technology – Industrial Technology Development Institute – Packaging Technology Division (DOST – ITDI – PTD).

The initiative is led by Dr. Rosalie A. Almadrones, Vice President for Research and Extension; Dr. Arlene C. Alegre, Director of Queen Pineapple Research and Development Institute (QPRDI) and Project Leader of “Utilization of Queen Pineapple (Ananas comosus L. var. ‘Queen’) Leaf and Leaf Fiber Waste for High Value Products”; and Ms. Mary Joy P. Paico, Project Leader of “Application of Pineapple Leaf Fiber-Based Cushion Pads as Auxiliary Packaging for Honeydew Melon (Phase 2)”. The session focused on pioneering sustainable packaging solutions and upgrading the pineapple value chain.

The University of Camarines Norte (UCN) formally strengthened its commitment to innovation-driven community development through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with partner Local Government Units (LGUs) and farmers' cooperatives on June 4, 2026, at the Vice President’s Conference Room.
This multi-sectoral partnership supports the implementation of the project, “Utilization of Queen Pineapple (Ananas comosus L. var. ‘Queen’) Leaf and Leaf Fiber (QPALF) Waste for High-Value Products,” a two-year initiative approved and funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST–PCAARRD) and implemented through the CNSC Queen Pineapple Research and Development Institute (QPRDI).
The project exemplifies the transformative role of research and innovation in sustainable agriculture by converting Queen Pineapple leaf and fiber waste into high-value, eco-friendly products, including sustainable vegan leather. Through the valorization of agricultural by-products, the initiative seeks to enhance resource efficiency, generate alternative livelihood opportunities, strengthen local enterprise development, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
This landmark collaboration unites academia, local government, cooperatives, and farming communities in a shared vision of advancing the Queen Pineapple industry in Camarines Norte while fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
The initiative is led by Atty. Ryan L. Estevez, DPA, President of CNSC; Dr. Rosalie A. Almadrones, Vice President for Research and Extension; and Dr. Arlene A. Alegre, Director of QPRDI and Project Leader. Supporting the project implementation are members of the research team: Mr. Patrick O. Cabrejas, MSc; Mr. Yeshua Dan R. Bigasa; Ms. Rezzamin N. Labitag; and Mr. Carl Vincent C. Abrio.
CNSC extends its sincere appreciation to its valued partners for their commitment and collaboration. Special recognition is given to Hon. Severino H. Francisco, Mayor of LGU Labo, for gracing the occasion and expressing strong support for the continued growth of the local pineapple industry. Appreciation is likewise extended to LGU Basud, LGU San Vicente, LGU San Lorenzo Ruiz, Labo Progressive Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LPMPC), Caayunan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CMPC), and San Lorenzo Ruiz Farmers Agriculture Cooperative (SLRFAC) for their active participation and partnership.
Together, these stakeholders are paving the way for a circular, innovation-driven, and sustainable future for the Queen Pineapple industry of Camarines Norte.
