Gideon, a judge of Israel found in Judges 6–8, was a reluctant leader called by God to deliver the Israelites from seven years of Midianite oppression. Despite his initial fear and doubts, he famously led only 300 men to defeat a massive Midianite army using torches and trumpets.

Key Aspects of Gideon's Story:

The Calling:
An angel found Gideon, a member of the weak tribe of Manasseh, threshing wheat in a winepress to hide from the Midianites. The angel called him a "mighty man of valor".

Destruction of Idols:
Before fighting the Midianites, God commanded Gideon to destroy his father’s altar to the pagan god Baal. He was nicknamed Jerubbaal, meaning "let Baal contend against him".

The 300 Soldiers:
God reduced Gideon's army from 32,000 to only 300 to ensure the victory was credited to God, not human strength. The men were chosen based on how they drank water.

The Test of the Fleece:
Gideon requested signs from God using a fleece to confirm his calling, demonstrating his initial hesitation.

Victory and Legacy:
Using strategy, trumpets, and lamps in jars, the 300 men caused the Midianite camp to panic and flee. Following the victory, Gideon led Israel in peace for 40 years.

Gideon is remembered as a "mighty man of war" who, despite his insecurities, obeyed God and brought peace to the land.
