What are you good at? What are your strengths? How will you improve your teaching skills?

In doing our job, goals, and passion in life, we use our strengths, not weaknesses. In teaching the English language, there are areas you consider your strengths.

One example is being good at grammar. As a teacher, you are confident to teach grammar as it is your strength. But, how will you improve more on grammar? By, continuously studying and sharing your knowledge with your students.

You can also achieve other strengths by challenging yourself. There may be times that you want to try something new and widen your knowledge. For example, you wanted to learn about pronunciation. You can collaborate with your colleagues.

Always remember to develop your skills and work out on your weaknesses. Make it your goal.

Are you always having the same lessons or the same routine? Why not try a new one and get out of your comfort zone?

There are times that as ESL teachers, we are usually in our comfort zone. For example, some teachers teach only grammar, or others like to teach only children.

In teaching English, work with an age group of students. For example, if you usually teach children, why not teach professionals to improve their English skills. There may be different age groups, but all of our students wanted to learn English.

In teaching English, most of the teachers teach grammar. Why not try to teach speaking or reading? There are times that students want to have conversations for them to practice what they are learning. Always be ready with different topics and have creativity in teaching.

Now, are you ready to get out of your comfort zone? There are a lot of learnings and fun store for you.

What makes you excited in class? What makes you excited to teach your students? Have you ever think about it?

First, find out what excites you. There are many things that teachers are excited about in the class. When you get excited, motivation comes after, so does creativity. One of the most exciting of being a teacher is when the student did a great job and understood the lesson. It means that he/she is ready to face a new chapter or journey like having exams or successfully fulfill their professions.

As ESL teachers, it excites us about the learning process of our students. We are excited to see and hear them speak the English language by themselves and fluently. We are excited to see them pass the exams and have their dream jobs and promotions.

Now, have you found the excitement in teaching the English language?

Do you want your classes more enjoyable and fun while students are learning?

Unleashing your creative self can help you improve your teaching skills and style.

First, you need to prepare your best online self. It gives a different ambiance when you look and feel well.

Our primary objective is to make our students engage in the class. Find creative ideas to transform your usual online discussion. Instead of having the routine presentations, why not have videos related to the topic, or ask the student a topic and have a portion of your class time to have a little discussion.

Before the end of the lesson, make sure that your student feels valued. Recognize the improvements of your students and the areas that need to be improved.

Always come up with something new and bring out the creative self in you.

There are times that we are stuck in a rut and made us not open to embracing changes. We are open-minded but, we are afraid to try other better ways to improve as ESL teachers.

Before embracing the new ideas, we must know our motivation.
Are you an open-minded person?
Are you willing to be committed to it?
Are you willing to make it real?

We also need to choose our areas of improvement. Let's have an example, the use of technology.

Now that we are amid the pandemic, most of us must learn and familiarize the use of technology. There are new ways to communicate with our students, and it keeps on upgrading nowadays. We must be open to changes.

Be open to try new ideas and open the possibilities now just for your profession but also personally.

Teacher collaboration makes a better learning experience. It does not only build a strong professional relationship but personally.

You can share your learnings with other teachers, and so do them. This way, your perception will be limitless and allows you to grow more outside of your comfort zone.

Learn to communicate not only with your students but with the other teachers. Be open to accept new ideas and teamwork.

Have you ever ask yourself what motivates you in teaching the English language?

The most important of all is the love of the language and the love of teaching. It brings joy and a rewarding experience to teach the students and see them be successful.

Aside from that is that while we teach, we also learn. Remember that every educator is a lifelong learner.

The fun study environment of teaching also motivates us. There are no dull moments when we are with our students.

How about you? What motivates you? Whatever your motivation is, always remember that the work that you love and enjoy most is the most important. And that is teaching.

"Patience is a virtue." Do you agree?

One of the skills as a teacher is to have patience. It is one of the most important characteristics aside from knowing the lessons.

Always remember that regardless of the age, race, or the education of our students, we must be their partners to learn the English Language. Some of the students may comprehend and understand the lesson or topic in no time, but some learn it in progress and requires more explanations or discussions. But whatever it takes, the reward of their learning is worth waiting for.

Aside from patience, always have a concern for the students about how they feel about the lesson for us to help them more.

Have fun teaching!
