There are seven sustainable construction principles:

1. Durability

• Install repairable features and appliances
• Prioritize good craftsmanship

2. Energy efficiency
• Design with energy-efficient insulation and features.
• Install energy-efficient appliances
• Design for air control and location factors

3. Waste reduction
• Use low-hazard materials
• Design adaptable buildings
• Recycle suitable materials

4. Indoor air quality
• Design good building ventilation
• Install appliance ventilation and filtration systems like HVACS
• Avoid materials that can pollute indoor spaces

5. Water conservation
• Install low-flow plumbing and appliances
• Prevent and look for pipe leaks
• Use water monitors to manage consumption

6. Sustainable materials
• Use renewable/repairable resources
• Consider material lifespan
• Prioritize certified sources from organizations like FSC

7. Sustainable design
• Research materials
• Research location and ecosystem details
• Evaluate design sustainability with BREEAM Assessment
By incorporating these principles, construction projects can:
- Reduce carbon footprint
- Conserve natural resources
- Improve occupant health and productivity
- Increase property value
- Support sustainable development
