As the rainy season intensifies across the Visayas, conditions such as stagnant water collecting in old tires, flowerpots, gutters, and other containers around homes may provide breeding sites for mosquitoes that transmit dengue. As of late July 2026, Daanbantayan has recorded nine confirmed dengue cases, while Cebu Province has recorded 381 cases along with two deaths.

However, provincial health officials clarified that the situation has not reached outbreak level. Capitol Public Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan described the increase as typical during the rainy season but emphasized that the province remains in a “guarded” situation rather than an epidemiological outbreak.

Dr. Leanna Canoy, PHO chief of hospitals, added, “𝘕𝘪-𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘥 𝘴𝘪𝘺𝘢 𝘯𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯.”

To address the rising cases, officials in Daanbantayan have rolled out localized dengue awareness and advocacy programs, such as the “𝙏𝙖𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙖 𝙋𝙖𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣” initiative under Mayor Gilbert Arrabis Jr. The program focuses on public awareness of dengue prevention, early recognition of signs and symptoms, and the importance of maintaining a clean environment to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

Meanwhile, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO), Toledo City recorded the highest number of cases with 49, followed by Barili with 39 and Talisay City with 34.

Capitol-run hospitals have also prepared in advance by ensuring adequate stocks of medicines and sufficient personnel to respond to an anticipated increase in dengue patients. To improve patient management, the provincial government activated Dengue Fast Lanes in all provincial and district hospitals—a system that prioritizes patients with suspected dengue for immediate assessment and laboratory testing.

Health officials noted that children aged six to 10 years old account for the highest number of infections, followed by those aged 11 to 20.

To assure the public, Catalan urged residents not to panic over the increasing cases, saying, “𝘞𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘰 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘫𝘶𝘥 𝘯𝘪 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘪𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘬-𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘬—𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴.”

A needle prick carries something far greater than a dose of medicine. It carries protection.

Measles [𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘥𝘢𝘴] and rubella, can spread among children who are not protected by vaccination. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause high fever and rashes and may lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and even death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), measles spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.

But how can a shot become a shield against a disease that can spread through the air?

In a way, a vaccine gives the immune system a preview of what it needs to recognize and fight. That is the science behind 𝙇𝙞𝙜𝙩𝙖𝙨 𝙏𝙞𝙜𝙙𝙖𝙨. Its weapon is not an antibiotic or a cure, but a biological lesson: a vaccine trains the immune system to recognize a threat before it encounters the actual disease-causing organism.

According to the Department of Health (DOH) and the Daanbantayan Primary Health Care Facility, the vaccines used in the Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-SIA) undergo processes intended to ensure their safety and effectiveness. The local advisory cites health authorities such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in assuring the public about the vaccines used in the campaign.

So, how can a shot be a shield from disease?

The vaccine gives the immune system a safer way to learn how to respond. Vaccines stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against specific antigens. The body also develops memory cells, allowing it to recognize the same threat and respond more quickly if exposed to it in the future.

Vaccines against measles have been used for decades and have proven effective in preventing the disease. WHO states that the measles vaccine has been in use for about 60 years and that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles.

That is why Ligtas Tigdas is more than a vaccination drive. It is immunology translated into public health, using the body's own biological memory to help stop a virus before it can cause disease.

A needle may sting or make a baby cry, but its purpose is protection. The moment may last only a few seconds, while the immune protection developed through vaccination can last much longer. WHO notes that, depending on the vaccine, protection may remain for years, decades, or even a lifetime.

When science turns a single shot into a shield, protecting a child becomes part of protecting an entire community.

🏀 Fight till the end! 💚

Daanbantayan National High School came back from an early deficit, trailing 2–9 in the first quarter, then fighting back to tie the game at 68-all in the fourth quarter. 🔥

Mantos hit back-to-back threes to keep DNHS in the game. 🎯🏀 Saint Isidore stretched it to the final buzzer on free throws, 70-68. ⏱️

Although the win was elusive, DNHS showed heart, teamwork, determination and school spirit until the end. 💪💚 A game, a finish, and a performance to remember! 🏀✨

Losing is not the end, it is part of every athlete’s journey, a chance to learn, grow and come back stronger. 🌱💪

For the hard fought game, respect to Saint Isidore. 🤝 The scoreboard may read 70-68, but DNHS proved that every second, every play, and every comeback matters. 💚🏆
