SCIENCE FEATURE || 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱, 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁

Diving into a mind clouded by emotional pain and overwhelming thoughts, the world of possibilities can begin to feel smaller, leaving fewer options visible to a mind desperately searching for a way forward.

In a world constantly moving, stressful experiences may slowly contribute to a person’s vulnerability, but no single experience can be considered the cause of su***de. When a mind becomes bombarded with overwhelming reflections, a person may struggle to see the different possibilities ahead.

According to a systematic review of 46 studies, people with a history of su***de attempts showed greater difficulties across several areas of decision-making. Yet, this information does not mean that everyone who has difficulty making decisions is suicidal.

Alongside this, researchers have studied cognitive control during suicidal crises. They note that during a serious crisis, a person may feel too overwhelmed to think of other solutions, imagine better possibilities, or make good decisions. Researchers suggest that limitations in a person’s ability to think through and control their thoughts may make it harder to see different solutions. However, some of these ideas are still based on limited evidence.

When a person’s mind struggles to see possible solutions, possibilities that may normally seem clear can become more difficult to recognize. What seems like a world filled with choices may suddenly appear much smaller when the mind is overwhelmed.

A person may feel silence and despair while struggling to see what other possibilities remain. None of us fully knows what another person may be going through. Sometimes, simply being considerate of another person’s feelings can be one way of recognizing that there may be struggles we cannot immediately see.

A mind may be clouded with thoughts, with possibilities becoming harder to recognize. But beyond what the mind can see during its most difficult moments, other possibilities may still exist, even when they have temporarily fallen out of view.

A breeze carrying faint traces of the sea slips through the noise, inviting anyone who catches it to follow. With every step, the crowd seems to fade, revealing a quiet little world where the rush of the outside becomes nothing but a distant hum. In the form of a café truck, peace begins where the four-wheeled vehicle parks and finds its spot.

Agwas, tucked into a beachfront corner in Carmen, lives up to its aesthetic of “peace found in cottagecore.” More than serving plant-based meals and delightful treats, it serves momentary silence amidst bustling crowds. It feels as though the thin rope rails hold thicker, invisible walls that separate the outside world from this little haven, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the setup: hanging plants, fairy lights, warmly lit lamps, and, of course, amazing food.

Stepping into Agwas’ bubble feels like stepping out of the world for a while, discovering thoughts that are often drowned out by the noise. Sometimes, all it takes is sitting beside a nature-decorated truck, breathing in the sea breeze, and simply letting the moment stay.

Every morning, each student rushes to school and comes across the routine. The building is built by its classrooms, corridors, seats, and they’re all identical—they all share the same iconic green and yellow colors, with each varnished seat looking never-ending when put against each other. As the uniformed students take their seats, only then can they experience yet another school day no other student would encounter the exact same way.

Some students talk through it, some would laugh through it, but through a teacher’s lens, they may all look the same, hold the same purpose—to get their scores high, to have good grades, to graduate. Yet, one could take a look at the school from their view and see what the students wish teachers saw beforehand: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆?

Smoke knows no borders. It doesn't simply stay where the fire begins.

For days, people in Cebu woke up to a gray veil hanging over their skies, caused by land and forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia, with smoke carried by southwest monsoon winds into the Philippines. The haze brought foggy skies and worsening air quality across Metro Cebu.

The drop in air quality did not come smoothly. Metro Cebu's Air Quality Index (AQI) hovered between 152 and 173 on Tuesday, September 1. It worsened in the following days, reaching 203 to 213 on Wednesday before peaking at 252 on Thursday. These levels placed Metro Cebu under increasingly unhealthy air conditions.

By Friday, however, the AQI dropped to 184, signaling a downward trend that continued through the weekend. On Sunday, September 6, the AQI improved further to 136, bringing Metro Cebu's air quality to the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category.

But the lower AQI reading did not mean that the health risk had disappeared. While atmospheric conditions were recovering, fine particulate matter remained high enough to pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups.

Amid the changing conditions, health authorities emphasized that precautions remained necessary.

“𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥,” health consultant Elisse Nicole Catalan said in a statement posted on her official page. “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬. 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵.”

Monitoring continued, and so did the need for preparedness.
Unexpectedly, Metro Cebu's air quality changed again. On September 7, the AQI climbed to 158, bringing it back to the “Very Unhealthy” classification--an increase from the previous AQI of 136.

With the shift in air quality, residents were encouraged to wear properly fitted N95 or KN95 masks when going outside. Those with heart and lung conditions, along with other vulnerable groups, were advised to take extra precautions and remain indoors.

Metro Cebu may be located far from where the fires began, but smoke knows no borders. What starts hundreds of kilometers away can still find its way into the air people breathe.

When a blackout happens, the internet could disappear, too. A smartphone does not create its own internet connection. While using the internet, your phone communicates with equipment outside the device—and that equipment requires electricity.

For mobile data, the phone connects wirelessly to a nearby cell site or base station. From there, the connection travels through a telecommunications network and eventually to the wider internet.

That’s why your phone can have a fully charged battery while parts of the network it depends on are experiencing a power interruption. Your phone may have power, but the network it connects to also needs electricity to operate.

Mobile phones communicate with equipment installed at cell sites, commonly associated with the towers people see along roads, on buildings, or in elevated areas. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a cellular network divides an area into geographic sections called cells. Each cell is served by radio equipment that communicates with mobile devices in the area.

When your phone uses mobile data, it sends and receives radio-frequency signals through this network.

Yet, the tower itself is only the most visible part.

A working cell site can include antennas, radios, base-station equipment, power systems, and batteries or other backup-power equipment. Telecommunications equipment needs electrical power to operate. During brownouts, however, losing electricity from the power grid does not necessarily mean that a cell site immediately shuts down.

Telecommunications companies may install backup-power systems, such as batteries, generators, or combinations of different backup-energy systems. These systems can allow telecommunications equipment to continue operating temporarily when normal grid electricity is unavailable.

So why can mobile data still disappear during a brownout?

A battery has a limited amount of stored energy. If a power interruption continues long enough, the battery supplying a telecommunications facility can become depleted.

But even a cell site with power does not tell the whole story.

Your nearest cell tower is not the entire internet.

Even if that particular site has power, equipment connecting it to other parts of the telecommunications network may experience problems. Your phone, the nearby cell site, and the other equipment carrying data through the network are all parts of the connection.

This is why a fully charged phone during a blackout does not guarantee a working internet connection. Your phone may still have power. A nearby cell site may even continue operating through its backup system. But internet access depends on more than either one.

When the lights go out, then, the disappearance of mobile data is not simply a story of a phone losing power. It is a reminder that behind every signal on our screens is a much larger network—and every part of that network needs power to keep us connected.

They grow where land meets sea, with their roots buried in mud and their branches reaching toward the sky.

We often walk past a tree without giving it a second glance, sharing a single question about how much it contributes to the environment that never crosses our mind. Yet, what if these trees standing quietly along our shores are doing more for us than we realize?

Mangroves are trees and shrubs adapted to live in coastal intertidal zones. They may not demand attention, but their roots help hold coastlines together, and their forests help communities withstand some of nature's harshest conditions.

These trees have unique adaptations, allowing them to survive conditions that many ordinary plants couldn't live in. Mangroves live in salty water in different ways. Some species filter salt at their roots before water enters the plant, while other species take in salty water and use specialized structures in their leaves to excrete excess salt.

If mangrove trees are equipped with these kinds of specialized adaptations to live and survive, how can they help protect communities from certain environmental situations?

Storms are among the environmental events we cannot control. As heavy rain pours, water moves quickly, and winds become physically felt. A mangrove tree anchored in brackish water doesn't sleep—it functions. It doesn't completely stop the storm, but serves as a form of protection. Its roots, trunks, and branches can slow moving water and reduce the energy of incoming waves before they reach areas farther inland. Tangled roots trap sediments that help stabilize shorelines.

However, their efficiency still depends on the density and width of the mangrove forest, water depth, and wave conditions.

For the municipality of Daanbantayan, mangroves carry a distinct local significance. Daanbantayan is a coastal municipality where topics like mangrove ecology, fisheries management, coastal erosion, and storm protection are of paramount importance. There is an 18-hectare man-made mangrove forest located at the CTU Campus in Agujo, Daanbantayan, Cebu. This local resource serves as an example of the relevance of mangrove conservation to the municipality.

Daanbantayan is also among the coastal communities of San Remigio, Daanbantayan, and Medellin involved in a mangrove reforestation effort through a collaboration between GCash and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI). The initiative resulted in the planting of 800,000 mangroves by 2024 through RAFI's One to Tree program.

As we discover deeper the complexity of the roots of a mangrove, we can witness how these also provide shelter for aquatic organisms.

A wide place of water involves different kinds of organisms. A knotted root serves as a place to find food and a place for young and small aquatic animals to hide from larger predators.

Aside from acting as a nursery that gives tranquility to young organisms, this also helps fisheries. An insight from Jay Carin Baya, a project officer of the One to Tree program, shared that their People's Organizations were happy because the amount of fish they were able to catch had increased, as had the amount of food they could bring to their tables.

The statement illustrates how these trees in coastal communities can contribute to a better quality of life. However, this also connects to the thought that losing mangroves can affect not only trees, but also marine organisms and those whose livelihood depends on fishing.

We can also consider the idea that not all mangrove-planting activities succeed. The Department of Science and Technology--Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) identified problems like species-site incompatibility and unsuitable environmental conditions as possible reasons why planting mangroves is not simple. Successful restoration requires considering some factors, from the plant being planted to the conditions of the site where it will grow.

But beneath their roots lies a complex ecosystem--one that supports people whose lives are tied to the sea and plays a part in protecting the coastline.

Like a shell that shields and supports what lies within, mangroves stand as nature's quiet protection. Rooted in mud, their purpose reaches far beyond what the eye can see.

Competition can be more than fighting against others. Sometimes, it is a chance to face oneself--to test one’s abilities and go beyond one’s own limits.

For Jhomar Vallaso, being offered a slot to compete in this year’s Kumbati sa Datu Daya was more than an invitation to join a contest. He saw it as an opportunity--a chance to prove to himself that there was more within him waiting to be discovered and improved. He chose to face the challenge and fill the gaps in his skills through experience.

Being an Arnisador since elementary has been a huge part of Jhomar’s journey. Even in his production number, he took the lead in choreographing his performance, incorporating Arnis movements that complemented the theme and brought years of his training into the spotlight.

Standing before a crowd of hundreds was nothing new to him.

“𝘕𝘢𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘥 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘬𝘰,” he said.

He competed with confidence, even extending a helping hand to his fellow competitors along the way.

“𝘒𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘢 𝘢𝘬𝘰 𝘯𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘵-𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘯, 𝘪-𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘢 𝘱𝘶𝘥 𝘯𝘢𝘬𝘰 𝘯𝘪𝘭𝘢.”

For Jhomar, the competition was not simply about proving that he could defeat others. When the opportunity came, he had wondered, “What if tryan lang nako ni?” He had something different to show--a skill he had carried with him for years and another opportunity to see where it could take him.

Eventually, that opportunity led him to the title of Datu Daya 2026.

Yet the title was not the only thing Jhomar carried away from Kumbati. He stood with a newfound honor, but also with a stronger sense of the person he had believed he could become--competent and confident.

He did not step onto the stage simply to win people’s hearts. He fought his way through Kumbati for something greater than a title: himself--to go beyond his limits, improve his skills, and discover that he could be someone more.

As the streets come alive with music, colors and dancing, everyone braves the traffic to be a part of the celebration. They move forward towards the grandstand, while some head in the opposite direction unnoticed--not toward the festivities, but toward a day full of moments, each earning them 25 pesos

Kuya Villar marches the streets long before the Haladaya dancers start representing their clusters, carrying a reused 4x6-bottle soft drink container. He makes his own music with his signature chant: “chht chht, oh tubig tubig.” The parade continues, and so does he, stopping only when someone signals to buy a bottle of cool water.

There is not one part of the event that makes Kuya Villar pause, as the laser lights start to beam over the crowd and hype them up, all Kuya Villar could hope for is for those lights to make the cool bottles of water reflect and make him visible despite being in a hundred-strong crowd. And every 25-peso purchase of a bottle doesn’t earn him another ritual showdown, special performance, and known-artist concert. It earns him the means to put food on the table and for his family’s needs--and that lasts longer than one festival night.

For Kuya Villar, the fiesta is not measured by the loudest music, brightest lights, or the biggest performances. It is measured by the amount bottles he manages to sell, the steps he takes from one crowd to another, and the amount he brings home at the end of the day.

While the crowd slowly thins as the fiesta draws closer to its end, Kuya Villar continues to work quietly within it--moving from one crowd to another, listening for another call, and hoping for another customer. With fewer people filling the streets, Kuya Villar steps slower, relieved that he is about to go home and finally rest. Still, a smile crosses his face every time someone stops him to buy a bottle. His celebration may look different from the colorful banderitas and upbeat music around him—built instead on his marches through the streets and his familiar selling chant--but it is no less meaningful: a quiet celebration with a loud purpose.

And when the last beat fades and the streets slowly grow quiet, Kuya Villar comes home with the money he earned through his voice and sweat--money that will help provide for his family's needs long after the festival night is over.
