The bells of St. Peterโs Basilica rang out in jubilant celebration today as white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signaling to the world: Habemus Papam! The Catholic faithful and curious onlookers alike turned their eyes toward the loggia of St. Peterโs, where Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States emerged as the newly elected pope.
Taking the name Pope Leo XIV, he becomes the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church โ and the first American in history to hold the sacred office.
As thousands filled St. Peterโs Square with applause, waving flags from every continent, the new pope stepped onto the central balcony with a gentle smile and extended his arms in blessing. His voice, calm yet firm, echoed across the square as he delivered his first apostolic address and โUrbi et Orbiโ blessing โ to the city and to the world.
