As we officially begin Academic Year 2026–2027, Notre Dame University proudly embraces this year's theme:

"𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴."

One of the most meaningful moments of the opening celebration is the 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞, a symbolic tradition that signifies the pursuit of knowledge, the commitment to truth, and the shared responsibility of nurturing minds and hearts in the spirit of the Oblate Mission.

As the Academic Candle is lit, may it remind every member of the Notre Dame University community to become a beacon of 𝙛𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝, 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮, 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩, 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚. May its light inspire us to lead with purpose, inspire with compassion, and transform lives through faith-filled education.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞

Notre Dame University expresses its strong and unequivocal condemnation of the senseless, heinous, and brutal killing of another teacher in Cotabato City, 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵, which occurred on the evening of July 2, 2026.

Ma'am Evangeline is dearly held in the NDU community as one of our part-time faculty members at the College of Arts and Sciences and Graduate School. Her loss is felt profoundly by her colleagues and students alike.

NDU stresses, most emphatically, that violence has no place in our society. Until we can guarantee the safety, security, and well-being of our teachers and students, we will continuously be challenged in moving toward a better education for the Bangsamoro.

The killing of a teacher is an affront to the soul of our society and the sanctity of our formative institutions. Educators ought to be the most respected professionals, for they are the ones who shape our future generation and, in doing so, define our fate as a people.

We urgently call upon law enforcement authorities to act swiftly, thoroughly, and transparently in their investigation, and to hold the perpetrators to account. We likewise call on both our national and local governments: the escalating pattern of school-related violence in our country can no longer be ignored.

Our schools need decisive support to implement robust security measures that will safeguard our campuses and make it difficult, if not impossible, for perpetrators to cause harm.

We need to act now.

We stand in solidarity with all who grieve over the loss of a dear public servant and educator.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family left behind by
Ma'am Evangeline. We echo your pain, share your grief, and stand with your pursuit of justice and closure.

We are tired of the impunity that instills fear in our institutions of learning. We are angered by the growing helplessness that creeps into our collective consciousness every time killings like this occur and perpetrators roam free.

May Ma'am Evangeline not become another name in the list of unresolved killings.
