π Understanding Sensory Issues
Sensory processing affects how a child receives, interprets, and responds to information from the world and from their own body. Some children may be over-sensitive, under-sensitive, or seek certain sensory experiences.
There are 8 commonly discussed sensory systems:
π Auditory β response to sounds and noise
π Visual β response to lights, colors, and visual surroundings
β Tactile β response to touch, textures, and clothing
π Oral/Gustatory β response to tastes and sensations in the mouth
π Olfactory β response to different smells
βοΈ Vestibular β balance, movement, spinning, and jumping
πͺ Proprioceptive β body position, pressure, and awareness of movement
β€οΈ Interoceptive β internal body signals such as hunger, thirst, temperature, and toilet needs
β¨ Understanding a childβs sensory needs can help parents, teachers, and therapists provide appropriate support and create a more comfortable environment for learning, communication, play, and daily activities.
π At Smart Developmental and Learning Center (SDLC), we believe that understanding each childβs unique sensory needs is an important step toward helping them learn, participate, and thrive. π±π§©
