UPLB Research and Extension UPLB Research & Extension is the official page of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for R&E

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE) is the unit in charge with UPLB's research and extension programs and activities. The office also handles staff development of personnel in the research, extension, and professional staff categories and assist in resource generation and establishment of linkages in R&E. Lastly, OVCRE promotes and reports R&E activities to the public. For this purpose, this official page was created to communicate R&E-related updates, news, upcoming activities, and accomplishments to the public.

OVCRE recently hosted two Philippine higher education institutions for a benchmarking activity and collaborative discussions.

On September 16, a delegation from the Catbalogan City Community College, led by its president, Dr. Nigel L. Cornejo, was officially welcomed by Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for R&E Marian P. De Leon. The team gathered to learn about UPLB’s research and extension framework, as well as practices on program implementation and partnership management.

Sharing insights during the session were OVCRE personnel (Ms. Czarlina May E. Magnata, Ms. Lean Mechelle D. Ramilo, Engr. Lavinia Marie M. Abucay, Ms. Maricris C. Cecilio, and Ms. Ruth M. Almario), alongside key representatives from UPLB units: Dr. Nico Jayson C. Anastacio (Director of CPAf's Community Innovations Studies Center); Mr. King Niño B. Manzano (UPLB BIDANI Program); Mr. John Paulo S. Quitoriano (UPLB National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology); Atty. Melo Jean T. Triños-Peralta (Director of the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office); and Asst. Prof. Eugene Raymond P. Crudo (Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Director of the UPLB Business Affairs Office).

Following this, Dr. Melencio C. Jalova Jr., director of the University Extension Services - Ranaw Sustainability and Resiliency Center at Mindanao State University - Marawi, visited OVCRE on September 18 to benchmark and explore collaborative opportunities in research and extension.

The Agricultural Genomics Research Center (AGRC), the country's first facility of its kind, was officially launched at UPLB today, September 21.

Equipped with modern laboratories for omics and genome-based R&D, the AGRC aims to enhance the country's agricultural competitiveness.

The facility's establishment is a key component of the project “Capacity-Building for Higher Education and the Establishment of Agricultural Genomics Research Center at the University of the Philippines Los Baños,” funded by the South Korean government through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and in partnership with UPLB and the International Rice Research Institute.

Officials from South Korea and UP graced the launch, including South Korean Ambassador Lee Dong-gy, KOICA Country Director Jung Youngsun, UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr., IRRI Director-General Yvonne Pinto, UP Vice President for Innovation Jose Joseph Marciano, National Scientist Dolores Ramirez, Professor Emeritus Rita Laude, and AGRC Director Maria Genaleen Q. Diaz.

Also in attendance were Department of Agriculture High-Value Crops Development Program Undersecretary Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero, Commission on Higher Education Commissioner Ricmar Aquino, UP Alumni Regent Fernando Sanchez, Jr., Los Baños Mayor Neil Andrew Nocon, Vice Chancellor for R&E Nathaniel C. Bantayan, and other officials from UPLB.

UPLB, as the lead convenor, hosted the 2nd General Assembly of the Philippines-Canada Network for Sustainability (PCNS) on September 14 at the UPLB Graduate School Building and via Zoom.

The event gathered representatives from various member institutions and partners from Canada. In his message, His Excellency David Hartman, Ambassador of Canada to the Philippines, highlighted the role of international partnerships in addressing sustainability challenges.

UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. reaffirmed UPLB’s commitment to future-proofing communities through academic excellence and innovation. Keynote insights from Dalhousie University through Dr. Balakrishnan Prithiviraj (Assistant Vice President for Global Affairs) expanded on these possibilities. He detailed models for faculty mobility, joint PhD offerings, and other potential collaboration opportunities.

Towards the end of the program, the PCNS members in attendance identified various thematic areas and assigned a lead HEI member to each area to facilitate the development of collaborative proposals for the future activities of the network.
