The Agribusiness students from Tokyo University of Agriculture (TUA/Tokyo NODAI) visited the Fruit Crop Nursery of the Institute of Crop Science for a hands-on learning experience in fruit tree propagation.

The students gained practical knowledge and experience in various propagation methods, as well as different techniques and approaches used in asexual plant multiplication techniques.

Facilitated by the FCN team led by Asst. Prof. Dara Realin and Mr. Allison Morales, the visit provided an opportunity for meaningful knowledge exchange and a closer look at the practical applications of agricultural science. Mr. Leomar Torio gave the hands-on interactive experience.

The Institute of Crop Science (ICropS) formally marked a new chapter in its academic, research and public service leadership during a turnover ceremony held at the NB Mendiola Hall, UPLB.

The event featured the ceremonial hand-over of the instituteโ€™s symbol of leadership and from the outgoing Director Dr Eureka Teresa M. Ocampo to the incoming Director, Dr. Tonette P. Laude signifying the transition of duties and shared vision for crop science advancement.

The ceremony was an opportunity for Dr. Ocampo to convey her appreciation to the ICropS staff and also support to ICropS newly appointed Director. Looking forward, Dr. Laude expressed enthusiasm alongside a deep awareness of the weight of her new responsibilities. She pledged her full commitment to elevating ICropS's standards in instruction, research, and extension. She also emphasized her drive to foster stronger collaborations to continuously refine and upgrade the institute's overall operations.

The momentous occasion was witnessed by College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) officialsโ€”led by Dean Dr. Amado A. Angeles, Associate Dean for Instruction Dr. Christine B. Adiova, and Associate Dean for Research and Extension Dr. Maria Luisa D. Guevarraโ€”alongside ICropS faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and student representatives who all gathered to show their warm support for the ICropS new director, Dr. Tonette P. Laude.

To address the surging market demand for Ube (purple yam), the Institute of Crop Science (ICropS), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), successfully hosted the "Training of Trainers: Ube Production to Product Development" from August 17โ€“19, 2026.

The three-day intensive program provided participants with a comprehensive foundation in Ube as a high-value crop. Key focus areas included:

โ€ข ๐๐จ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐…๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ & ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: Morpho-botanical characteristics, nursery management, field establishment, pest and disease management, and Philippine Good Agricultural Practices (PhilGAP).
โ€ข ๐‡๐š๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ & ๐๐ž๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐: Postharvest handling, proper storage methods, commercial scaling, and innovative product development/value-adding techniques.

The event brought together key agriculture extension workers, researchers, and local producers. Attendees included representatives from DA-BPI centers across the country (Main Office, Baguio, Guimaras, La Granja, and Davao), the DOST-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, and local government agricultural offices from Bontoc (Southern Leyte), Mansalay (Oriental Mindoro), Laguna, and Lopez (Quezon). Active industry farmers also joined the cohort to bridge research with field application.

Through accessible learning platforms and expert-led discussions, Project LAYAG bridges scientific research and real-world agricultural applications, highlighting the role of biotechnology in food security, sustainability, and national development.

As part of this initiative, the Agricultural Biotechnology Webinar Series brings together researchers and practitioners to share current advances in genomics, functional foods, and crop improvement. This series serves as a venue for meaningful knowledge exchange on how modern biotechnological tools, such as genomics and omics-based approaches, are applied to important Philippine crops and indigenous plant resources.
