Mathematics appreciation, which refers to studentsโ€™ enjoyment, perceived value, and willingness to engage with mathematics, is increasingly recognized as critical for sustained engagement in quantitative fields. This study investigated the extent to which demographic variables predict first-year college studentsโ€™ mathematics appreciation using Random Forest Regression. Data were gathered from 260 students enrolled in Mathematics in the Modern World at a Philippine public university. Eight demographic factors were examined, including age, s*x, academic strand, senior high school mathematics grade, school type, socioeconomic status, learning modality preference, and marital status. The full model yielded no explanatory power, while a refined model retaining the five most influential variables improved marginally. Findings indicate that demographic factors alone provide limited predictive utility for mathematics appreciation, underscoring the need to incorporate affective, motivational, instructional, and contextual variables in future predictive models. The study emphasizes the importance of context-sensitive and student-centered approaches in fostering positive attitudes toward mathematics.

Sustainability research in food processing covers process innovation, environmental assessment, and implementation, but these areas are not always evaluated together. This Scopus-based systematic review examined peer-reviewed English-language journal articles obtained using a predefined search. Keyword co-occurrence mapping was conducted using 442 records, and 113 eligible studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. Within this query-defined sample, three overlapping domains were identified: waste valorization and resource recovery, environmental performance assessment, and circular-economy implementation and adoption. The review therefore proposes a stakeholder-informed minimum indicator set covering decent work, equity and inclusion, occupational health and safety, food security and affordability, community well-being, participation, and distributive effects. The proposed framework integrates these indicators with process performance, environmental validation, economic feasibility, scale-up, implementation conditions, and uncertainty analysis to support comparison among alternatives.

๐—”๐—ฏ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜:
The engineering planning and design of Small Water Impounding Projects (SWIPs) necessitates proper site selection to ensure technical viability and sustainability. This study developed localized criteria for assessing the site suitability of SWIPs in the whole province of Bukidnon by integrating national engineering standards with local expertsโ€™ opinions using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Pairwise comparison of the formulated criteria was performed by selected local experts to derive their relative weights, with consistency ratios checked against Saatyโ€™s thresholds to validate their judgments. The resulting weight set showed that hydrological factors dominated the hierarchy, with annual rainfall (25.2%) and watershed area (13%) contributing the most to the composite suitability index, followed by geotechnical factors and, to a lesser extent, accessibility and socio-economic factors. A weighted linear combination was used to compute pixel-level suitability, classified into four FAO-based suitability classifications. Results provided an objective, transparent, spatially explicit, and site-specific framework for screening and prioritizing SWIP sites in the upland areas of Bukidnon in support of irrigation development in the country.

Sweet potato is considered an alternative staple crop, and its use is typically limited to traditional applications. The study aims to use sweet potato, especially the non-marketable variety, as the primary base ingredient for developing a hot sauce. Several studies have examined sauces that use tomato, banana, and oil in other Asian and Western foods, and no records of hot sauces were identified; hence, this study. A product development experimental study in a three-level, three-factor mixture design, following the set plan 11.6 of Cochran and Cox (1957) for sensory evaluation, was used to optimize the formulation of hot sauce products. The sweet potato-chili sauce has a rust-brown to red-orange color and a well-blended flavor of sweetness, sourness, and spiciness. The optimum formulation was attained at 52% w/w sweet potato, 37% v/w vinegar, and 11% w/w chili, with a predicted acceptability rating of 7, which was moderate on the 9-point hedonic scale. Seventy-two percent (72%) of the respondents, composed of 45% of females and 27% of males, preferred the formulated sweet potato-chili sauce compared to the commercially available sriracha. This implies a good probability of market survival in terms of consumer acceptability.

Destructive sampling-based generalized additive model (GAM) prediction of Dendrocalamus asper (Schult. & Schult.f.) Backer rootโ€“shoot ratios

๐—”๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฟ:
Edgar Allan C. Po

๐—”๐—ฏ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜:
The above-ground biomass reported for Dendrocalamus asper is impressive. However, there is a dearth of studies on the below-ground biomass of this species*. This knowledge gap may leave farmers and other stakeholders unable to fully realize the financial benefits of participating in voluntary carbon credit initiatives. In this study, empirical estimates of below-ground biomass and root-to-shoot ratios (RSR) were generated for Dendrocalamus asper using destructive sampling (n = 27). I found an RSR range of 0.18โ€“2.20. Of the eight Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) that I evaluated, the predictive model involving fixed-effect bamboo class size, a smooth for the number of culms per clump, and random-effect smooths for location and site within location was selected for its robust, stable performance. In-sample and cross-validation Leave-One-Out (LOOCV) and K-fold R2 performance of the selected model were 0.743, 0.512 and 0.466, respectively. Post-hoc power estimates, based on the terms of the chosen GAM, yielded 0.997 and 0.86 for the model terms, number of culms smooth, and intercept, respectively. All other terms in the model were near 0, except for one class parameter, which was at 0.64. A Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to determine whether 27 samples were sufficient to predict RSR using the chosen GAM. Increasing the sample size from 1 to 20 per site or from 27 to 540 overall did not increase the power estimates for low-powered terms. However, caution should be exercised as simulated data cannot substitute for biological replication. Future work with larger, more diverse datasets across ecological gradients will be necessary to refine and assess the broader generalizability of this study's findings.

Growth Performance of Broiler Chickens Fed with Varying Levels of Cacao Bean Shell

๐—”๐—ฏ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜:
Background: Interest in alternative agro-industrial by-products for poultry nutrition has been prompted by the high cost of conventional feed. Cacao bean shells (CBS) derived from roasted, unfermented cacao beans, a by-product of cacao processing, may serve as a sustainable feed ingredient for broiler chickens. Purpose: Evaluated in this study were the effects of graded levels of sun-dried roasted CBS on the growth performance and feed efficiency of broiler chickens under tropical production conditions. Method: Proximate analysis was conducted on CBS processed using three methods: air-dried (ADC), sun-dried with hot water treatment (HWC), and sun-dried only (SDC). For the feeding trial, a total of 120 uns*xed, two week old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to four isonitrogenous and isocaloric dietary treatments containing 0% (control), 5%, 10%, and 15% sun-dried CBS. Monitoring of body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio was performed throughout the experimental period. Results: No significant differences among processing methods were shown by proximate analysis (p> 0.05). Lower total weight gain and average daily gain were observed in birds fed 5% CBS compared to the control, while a progressive decrease in feed intake was recorded with higher CBS inclusion levels. Although numerical variation was noted in the FCR, no significant differences were identified. Conclusion: Inclusion of sun-dried roasted CBS in broiler diets at low levels (up to 5%) can be achieved without major deleterious effects on growth performance. Reduced growth was observed at higher inclusion levels, likely attributable to increased fiber content and effects on feed palatability. Further investigation is required to assess amino acid composition, nutrient digestibility, and anti-nutritional factor content to optimize the utilization of CBS in broiler diets.
