My journey to Medicine did not begin with confidence. For a long time, I thought I was being rejected by the path I once dreamed of. I had always been an achiever, but during Medical Technology, I went through seasons when my mental health made studying and continuing school difficult. I transferred schools, had to pause my studies, graduated later than planned, and even postponed my board examination because of serious health challenges. I spent years questioning God, asking why my journey had to be different from everyone elseโs.
By Godโs grace, I eventually passed the Medical Technologist Licensure Examination. Yet after passing, I no longer planned to become a doctor. I was afraid of failing again, so I chose to work and eventually pursue a different life. But God slowly brought back the desire He had placed in my heart.
While working as a medical technologist, I realized that there were patients I wanted to help beyond the limits of my profession. I also became blessed with friends who continue to serve through medical missions and would invite me to communities where access to healthcare is limited. Being able to meet and listen to patients in these places brought back something I had almost forgotten: becoming a doctor had once been my first dream. I realized how much I wanted to reach more people and allow them to experience the love of God through the care I could give.
My delays, failures, illness, and doubts were not wasted. God used them to redirect me.
Medicine is difficult, but whenever I feel exhausted, I remind myself that it is a blessing to be exhausted for the things we once prayed for. I am now living in a prayer that God answered. Isaiah 41:10 reminds me, โI will uphold you with My righteous right hand.โ I may not always feel capable, but I know God brought me here, and I trust that He will carry me through.
