Mariz Umali-Tima, Senior News Producer and Anchor of GMA, encouraged young campus journalists to remain resilient and committed to truth as she shared her experiences covering challenging stories during her talk at the 4th National Campus Journalism Convention 2026 on March 6 at Manila Grand Opera Hotel.

Umali recounted the realities journalists face in the field, including harassment both online and in person, emphasizing that courage, integrity, and commitment to truth are essential in the profession.

She reminded participants that journalism requires discipline in telling the truth and that reporters must continue delivering fair and accurate stories despite difficulties encountered in the field.

Umali also highlighted three key principles for young journalists: protecting the truth, safeguarding their integrity, and maintaining the courage needed to serve the public.

Concluding her talk, she expressed support for campus journalism and rallied the audience with the message, โ€œMabuhay ang Campus Journalism.โ€

Leila de Lima urged campus journalists to pursue truth with discipline, humility, and courage during her keynote address in the Opening Program of the 4th National Campus Journalism Convention 2026 held March 6 at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Speaking before student journalists and publication advisers from universities and colleges nationwide, De Lima stressed that responsible journalism requires what she described as โ€œforensic curiosity,โ€ encouraging journalists to examine issues carefully and remain committed to accuracy and integrity.

โ€œYou are not just writing. You are learning forensic curiosity,โ€ De Lima said, urging journalists to be meticulous, teachable, and collaborative while recognizing the responsibility that comes with the power of truth.

The three day convention, themed โ€œInvestigative and Digital Journalism: Championing Human Rights and Democracy,โ€ gathered campus journalists across the country to strengthen investigative reporting and adapt to developments in digital journalism.

Representing the University of Northern Philippines was Prof. Ade John Gestole, Assistant Head of the Student Publication Services.

Earlier in the program, Rodel John Q. Damian delivered the opening remarks highlighting the role of campus journalism in developing responsible communicators.

Manila Vice Mayor Angela Lei โ€˜Chiโ€™ Atienza welcomed the participants and shared her experience as a former journalist, emphasizing the duty of media practitioners โ€œto get to the heart of the matter.โ€

โ€œWe will all be able to make this country great again,โ€ Atienza said, expressing confidence in journalismโ€™s role in strengthening public discourse.

Meanwhile, Dona Pazzibugan-Porcalla, Director of Public Affairs of the Department of Education, reminded journalists to remain ethical amid the growing use of artificial intelligence in newsrooms.

โ€œBe AI ready but prioritize human first,โ€ she said.

The event also featured cultural presentations of different regions and a ceremonial planting of banners by participating institutions as a symbol of commitment to campus journalism.

Veteran broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro emphasized that press freedom must be exercised responsibly.

โ€œTruth has to be based on facts, not on revenge,โ€ Lazaro said.

An open forum followed the plenary sessions where participants discussed current issues affecting journalism and campus publications.

The convention is until March 8, 2026.

The PASUC-1 Culture and Arts Directors released an official statement on February 26, 2026, clarifying the earlier announcement regarding title adjustments in the 2026 Mr. and Ms. PASUC-1 Pageant held at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP).

In the statement, the Directors acknowledged that the previously announced adjustment in rankings was made without prior consultation with the Board of Judges and the UNP Tabulation Team. They have since affirmed that the official decision of the Board of Judges, as reflected in the duly signed final tally sheet, remains final.
Accordingly, Ms. Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) remains Fourth Runner-up, while Ms. Pangasinan State University (PSU) remains Third Runner-up.

The PASUC-1 Cultural Directors extended their apologies to concerned stakeholders for the confusion caused.
