Our 2nd speaker is an award-winning physicist with a British Empire Medal for her work on science diversity. She is an expert in Raman spectroscopy and has a new book for children published recently. 👩🏻‍🔬

We are excited to welcome you to the Physics Meetup with Nobel Laureate in Physics Prof. Donna Strickland from the University of Waterloo, Canada!🏅🥇

The Nobel Lecture will happen on September 17, Friday, from 8:00-9:30 PM (PhST). The session will be moderated by the Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2017 Winner and physics student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ms. Hillary Diane Andales. ✨💜

Prof. Strickland was the first woman after 55 years to be awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018 after Marie Curie (for her discovery of radiation in 1903) and Maria Goeppert-Mayer (for discoveries about nuclear structure in 1963). 🧑🏻‍🔬 Prof. Strickland helped revolutionize laser physics and paved the way toward the shortest and most intense laser pulses created by humankind, leading to a number of applications today in industry and medicine. ⚛️

Physics Meetup is back! 🌌 Join us in our 21st session this July 24, Saturday, from 9:00-10:30 AM (Philippine Standard Time), with networking from 10:30-11:00 AM on LITTLE PARTICLES IN A BIG UNIVERSE. We are excited to host Prof. Philip 'Flip' Tañedo from the University of California, Riverside, USA, and the first professor of Filipino descent working on dark matter theory (particle physics). 🌠

About the Speaker: 👨🏻‍🏫
Prof. Flip Tañedo spends his time thinking about dark matter. He grew up in Los Angeles, USA, and fell in love with physics after reading The Physics of Star Trek. This carried into degrees in mathematics and physics at the Universities of Stanford, Cambridge, Durham, and a Ph.D. at Cornell. After a postdoc at the University of California, Irvine, he is now a faculty at the University of California, Riverside, where he is known for being covered in chalk dust after a long day’s work.

About the Talk: ⚛️
Particle physics is the study of nature at its most fundamental level. Particle physicists use data from the largest colliders to learn about the smallest building blocks of the universe. So what exactly do particle physicists do and what are the big questions they hope to answer? And when all is said and done—what is a particle, anyway?

The Physics Meetup session is FREE, and certificates will also be given. Mobile data (load) assistance is also available on a first-come, first-served basis. Senior high school students are highly encouraged to join! 🥰
