๐๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐, ๐พ๐๐ฝ๐ ๐พ๐๐๐ โ As the first light of dawn broke over the South Road Properties at 5:30 a.m. on March 21, the once-quiet coastline was stirred by the rustle of biodegradable sacks and the steady rhythm of determined footsteps. Students and faculty from NU Cebu joined forces with SM Cares and the SM Green Movement to transform the Inayawan shoreline into a frontline effort against plastic pollution.
At the heart of the universityโs participation was Banay Cebuanu, NU Cebuโs Community Extension Office, which worked hand in hand with SM Cares to mobilize the โCebuaNUโ spirit of volunteerism. Mr. Santiago 'Santi' Lingganay, Coordinator of Banay CebuaNU, emphasized that the universityโs mission extends beyond the classroom through active engagement in community and environmental initiatives. Despite the spontaneous nature of the invitation, Lingganay pushed forward with the initiative, demonstrating that the spirit of volunteerism is strongest when it responds to the environmentโs most urgent needs.
The collaborative effort coincided with World Water Day, transforming a global observance into a local mission of restoration and environmental stewardship. The activity served as a powerful reminder that freshwater remains a finite resource and that coastal health is inseparable from the sustainability of water systems. Pollution along the coastline threatens marine ecosystems and food security, as microplastics embedded in coastal sediments eventually enter the marine food chain and impact resources that sustain Cebuโs growing population.
Beyond its environmental impact, the initiative highlighted the importance of collective responsibility. By removing coastal debris that could serve as breeding grounds for pests and sources of toxic chemical runoff, the volunteers contributed directly to safeguarding both the shoreline and surrounding communities. The participation of students further strengthened the initiativeโs long-term impact, nurturing an environment-first mindset among the next generation of leaders and advocates.
As the clock struck 8:00 a.m., piles of filled sacks stood as a stark reminder of the scale of pollution along the coastline, yet they also symbolized hope and resilience within the community. Through the leadership of Banay CebuaNU and the support of the SM Green Movement, the event demonstrated that even a sudden call to action can spark meaningful and lasting change.

Under the warm afternoon sun of Mabolo, Cebu City, the Regla Day Care Center transformed into a space of care, comfort, and compassion as NU Cebu brought its services beyond the campus walls.
On March 18, NU Cebu, through its Health Services Office (HSO), in partnership with the Banay CebuaNU Community Extension Office (ComEx) and the Guidance Services Office (GSO), carried out a community medical mission dedicated to young learners. More than a routine outreach, the initiative reflected a deeper commitment, to reach communities where care is most needed.
Guided by the theme โKahimsog sa Bata, Kahayag sa Ugma,โ the activity placed children at the center of its purpose, recognizing that a healthy beginning shapes a brighter future. Healthcare professionals and student volunteers worked hand in hand, not only addressing medical needs but also creating a nurturing environment where children felt seen, safe, and valued.
The presence of partners such as SM City Foundation Inc., which provided essential medicines, strengthened the missionโs impact. Meanwhile, the involvement of the Guidance Services Office and Banay CebuaNU ensured that care extended beyond physical health, incorporating psychosocial support and meaningful interaction with the learners.
Throughout the afternoon, children received free medical and dental check-ups, along with necessary medications. Yet, beyond these services, what truly defined the mission were the shared smiles, gentle reassurances, and moments of connection that turned a simple outreach into a meaningful experience.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17), the initiative demonstrated how collaboration can create tangible change in local communities.
More than a one-day effort, the medical mission stood as a reminder of NU Cebuโs enduring vision, one rooted in service, compassion, and collective responsibility. In every child cared for and every life touched, the university continues to prove that true education extends far beyond the classroom, it reaches the heart of the community. ๐๐

NU Cebu students gathered at the 10th Floor Sports Complex of NU Cebu on March 4 for the Career Talk titled โThe Nationalian EdgeโMastering EQ to Turn Your Passion into a Profession,โ a key highlight of Career Month 2026 organized by the NU Cebu Guidance Services Office.
The symposium aimed to equip students with insights on career readiness, emotional intelligence (EQ), and purposeful decision-making as they prepare for their future professional paths.
The program formally opened with the singing of the national anthem, followed by a solemn prayer led by a member of the NU Cebu Peer Facilitators, setting a reflective tone for the event. This was followed by a welcome message from the NU Cebu Academic Director, Dr. Anne Caroline M. Castillo, who warmly greeted the participating students from various programs including BS Medical Technology, BS Psychology, BS Accountancy, BS Architecture, BS Civil Engineering, BS Computer Science, and BS Tourism Management.
To energize the audience, a short icebreaker activity was facilitated by Ms. Jessielou J. Loquias, NU Cebu Guidance Counselor, together with the eventโs master of ceremonies, Mr. Emerson B. Aller, encouraging student participation and creating an engaging atmosphere before the main session.
The highlight of the event was the talk delivered by resource speaker Mr. Jovenir F. Bataican, who shared practical insights on how emotional intelligence can help transform passion into a meaningful profession. Bataican emphasized the importance of self-awareness, purpose, and authenticity in navigating both personal growth and career opportunities.
During his talk, he encouraged students to โknow their whyโ and reflect on their strengths, values, and aspirations, noting that understanding oneโs purpose serves as a guiding compass in life decisions.
The career symposium was conducted in two sessions to accommodate students from different programs. The morning session catered to students from BS Medical Technology and BS Psychology, while the afternoon session was attended by students from BS Accountancy, BS Architecture, BS Civil Engineering, BS Computer Science, and BS Tourism Management.
The event concluded with the awarding of a token of appreciation to the resource speaker, followed by a commemorative photo session and the singing of the NU Hymn, marking the end of the program.
As part of Career Month 2026, the symposium also served as a Guidance Services Office (GSO) clearance requirement for Term 3, ensuring that students not only fulfill academic requirements but also gain meaningful career insights and inspiration.
The activity ultimately encouraged Nationalians to develop emotional intelligence, pursue their passions, and prepare themselves to transform their aspirations into future professions.
