Spanning three years, Alaska National High School has produced award-winning editorial cartoonists at the Division Schools Press Conference. In January 2024, Jungie Baclayon earned 1st place for his take on Cebu City’s heavy traffic, while in December 2025, Jules Añasco placed 5th for his cartoon on fossil fuel companies allegedly contributing to the climate crisis. Mentored by Mr. Dennis Jay Tecson, these results highlight editorial cartooning as an area where Alaskans consistently excel.

From being a column writer (Grades 10 and 11) to an editorial cartoonist (Grade 12), you truly delivered, Jules Añasco . Thank you for bringing prestige to Alaska NHS. Your 5th place finish out of 105 participants in Editorial Cartooning (English)at the recently concluded DSPC 2025 is a testament that Alaska may be a small school, but it has students like you, students who, when discovered and enriched, can do extraordinary things.
Looking at the list of the Top 5, the whole Alaskan community feels extremely proud that you are brushing elbows with schools long regarded as powerhouses.
Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Dennis Jay Tecson, his coach, Ma’am Eleanor D. Gallardo , ANHS School Head; Ma’am Maria June Candia , SPA in The Aurora; and to everyone who supported him in this journey. Your constant grace and wisdom have truly contributed to this milestone.
To the other CJs who fell short, know that showing up despite the uncertainties and the odds already reflects a winning attitude. Cheer up, this is not the end of your story.
