ABA Tip for Parents: Helping Children Transition Back to Routine

After breaks or holidays, returning to daily routines can be challenging for children—especially those who thrive on structure. A smooth transition helps reduce anxiety and supports positive behavior.

Helpful ABA-based tips:
✅ Reintroduce routines gradually
✅ Use visual schedules to set clear expectations
✅ Practice consistency with wake-up, meal, and activity times
✅ Reinforce positive behavior with praise or small rewards
✅ Prepare your child ahead of time by talking about upcoming changes
✅ Model calm and flexible behavior during transitions

Remember: Transitions take time. Patience, structure, and encouragement go a long way!

A prompt hierarchy is a structured system of instructional support used to facilitate skill acquisition.

It involves systematically varying the level of assistance provided to the learner, beginning with more intrusive prompts when necessary and gradually fading to less intrusive prompts as the learner demonstrates increased independence.

Prompts may include physical, model, gestural, verbal, or visual supports, depending on the learner’s needs and the nature of the skill being taught.

The goal is not performance with assistance, but independent and generalized responding across settings, stimuli, and instructors.

Failure to fade prompts appropriately can result in prompt dependency, whereas systematic fading supports skill maintenance and autonomy.
