Facts on Philippine Aquatic life A Collection of data of the Philippine endemic, native and introduced aquatic fauna. Hello Everyone, my name is Jojo Arellano and I am an aquarium hobbyist.

I have been fond of keeping aquatic fauna at a very young age and until now, the aquatic world continue to amaze me. Back in the day, when goldfish and angelfish were a huge hit, I often see displays of local species of fish that are kinda rare and are often, not given any value by the people selling it and the people that are buying. Most of the time what fascinates the hobbyists, especially the

new ones, are the imports and the local species are disregarded and are not given attention at all. I am probably different, because I have this huge curiosity of what species are within the Philippines' local waters and I have been collecting some of these species and keeping them. For years, I have done my own research that involves a lot of identifying and classifying the local species that I encounter, either at a local vendor or by exploring the rivers, estuaries and the sea. Not everything that we can find online is accurate and it will sometimes take me hours of cross-referencing just to find the most accurate information of a certain species. I would like to share with everyone, the unique array and beauty of the Philippines' local aquatic fauna.

Banded Archerfish vs Seven-Spot Archerfish

Archerfishes are the most popular brackish water fish in the world due to their unique hunting style that earned them their name. They hunt insects that dwell on the branches of trees and plants near the surface of the water, mostly in mangrove areas. They are capable of accurately spitting jets of water towards their target with enough force to knock it off and fall into the water. Despite their generally peaceful behavior, Archerfish should not be kept with smaller fish.

Below are two known species of Archerfish that are native to the Philippines and are popular in the hobby. The Banded Archerfish -Toxotes jaculatrix (top) is the more common species available while the Seven-Spot Archerfish -Toxotes chatareus (bottom) is a bit rare. They look similar except the latter has a combination of seven spots and black bands on the sides of its body.

Keep at least seven or more of these fish in a tightly covered tank to prevent them from jumping out. Feed a varied diet of feeder crickets, roaches and small fish. The fish can be trained to take standard fish pellets in time.

Hey guys, our local animal rescue organization needs our help in winning a contest on Facebook called the "Mental Facebook Charity Challenge" by Carlos Celdran. The Island Rescue Organization or IRO was founded in 2010 and has continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of animals. Recently, IRO took the challenge of keeping the survivors of the Dogfighting syndicate in Cavite. IRO also helped in the recent bust in Laguna under the same syndicate. The organization already has it's local rescues plus the Cavite pitbulls under it's care and winning this contest will go a long way in providing the rescues the much needed assistance. Here's a picture of a young Toxotes jaculatrix ( Banded Archerfish ) that we spotted and caught by one of our members, during our Trek to Dalaguete, Cebu, Philippines. There's plenty of these species in that area that would swim in schools just like in Ozamiz.
