General information
University of Cebu Chorus started its roots back in 1979 as a High School English Department Speech Choir known as Circle of Friends then officially known as the Cebu Central Colleges ( CCC) High School Glee Club which was founded by Atty. Paulino Y. Yabao, English High School teacher then, a former UC Vice-President for Personnel and Assistant Dean for College of Law in UC Banilad, and Dr. Erlinda P. Barcelo, a CCC High School Principal then, and a retired UC Vice- President for Administration; and Mr. Raymund A. Abao as the assistant Choir Trainer and presently the UC Chorus Choir Director.
In 1983, Dr. Orlando B. Magno was appointed as the Director of Student Cultural Services office after institutionalizing all the cultural organizations in University of Cebu. In the same year the CCC High School Glee Club found its way as the official choir of the school after the splendid performance in “ Just Once a Beautiful World Concert” that made and convinced the UC School President Atty. Augusto W. Go to decide the latter’s status after watching the musical concert.
When the school acquired its university status in 1991, the Choir’s name was changed from CCC Chorus to UC Chorus. And as it keeps on giving performances, UC Chorus was then called the as the School’s “Ambassador of Goodwill” and even cited as the most sought after choir in Cebu with an average of 150 performances annually up to present.
Last 1999, UC Chorus made its debut album entitled “ Colours of Chorus“, a 9 tracker CD Album, all original compositions of UC Chorus Choir Director Mr. Raymund A. Abao. UC Chorus garnered more than 30 Choral Competition Championship titles in local and national arena. To name a few, they were the champions of these following competitions:, Grand Slam Champion of Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (2001-2003), Grand Slam Champion in the Department of Tourism Caroling Contest (2001-2003), Regional Champion Private Schools Athletic Association (2003). National Champion SM Mega Choir Showdown (2010), Champion Ng Khai Gleek Squad (2010) but unfortunately, in as much, that UC Chorus would like to join an international choral competition, the much needed financial support from internal and external supporters are deemed and least possible.
In 2005, UC Chorus celebrated its’ Twenty-Fifth Year Anniversary with a concert entitled “Rhapsody in Silver” a total of Fifteen performances in all with a gala & recognition night that highlighted the anniversary and was held in Grand Convention Center and the second album of the group entitled “ The Mass”, all religious songs intended for a catholic mass rites.
