On 2026年2月18日, Abellana National School had the honor of hosting The Japan Foundation, Manila for a classroom observation, highlighting our continued commitment to Japanese language education.

The visiting delegation — Okada Kaoru, Ide Reina, and Ashley Ilanan — were warmly welcomed by our Nihongo sensei’s Almaluna Lumapac, Jenlyn Restauro, Cristina Romagos, and Ishimoto Masumi. The day began with a discussion about teaching strategies, student engagement, and communicative activities, providing valuable insights for both teachers and students.

Grade 9 – Kiyomizudera students, under Jen-sensei’s guidance, showcased their Japanese skills through lessons on shumi (hobbies), verb usage, and frequency expressions, applying what they learned in paired speaking activities. To make learning lively and interactive, students played the rhythmic Japanese hand game せっせっせーのよいよい (Sesse-sse no Yoiyoi), practicing numbers, colors, and vocabulary while maintaining rhythm, focus, and teamwork.

Students also participated in a digital quiz with QR-coded response cards, reinforcing vocabulary retention and active participation. The day concluded with a reflection activity, where students shared their key takeaways on leaf-shaped papers and displayed them on a classroom “tree,” symbolizing growth and learning. 🌿✨

The visit demonstrated the dedication of our teachers and the enthusiasm of our students, creating a supportive, engaging, and meaningful learning environment. This collaboration with The Japan Foundation, Manila reinforces the shared goal of strengthening Japanese language education in the Philippines.

On 2026年1月15日, the Grade 10 Kansha and Kizuna students took part in a meaningful culture session titled "Let's draw fireworks" or “いっしょにはなびをかく”, where learning, creativity, and tradition came together. Through this activity, students explored the lively customs and activities of Japan’s summer festivals, discovering how culture is celebrated beyond the classroom.

As part of the session, students created their own fireworks using specially shaped molds made from recycled cardboard and plastic. Alma-sensei highlighted the importance of sustainability during the activity, reminding everyone that cultural appreciation can go hand in hand with caring for the environment. ♻️🎨

Guided by Ishimoto-sensei and Alma-sensei, the students also learned the heartfelt history behind fireworks in Japan. Long ago, during a time of epidemic and great loss, fireworks were lit to honor and send prayers to loved ones who had passed away. Over time, hanabi came to symbolize deeper meanings — believed to drive away evil spirits and represent hope and continuous development for Japan. 🎇

More than just an art activity, this session became a moment of reflection, remembrance, and cultural appreciation, reminding us that even the brightest fireworks carry stories of the past and hopes for the future. 🇯🇵✨
