Grilled to Perfection

I thought I was doing better, but then I was made to realize that there was still so much room for improvement. I was oblivious to so many factors that matter so much, despite being miniscule at first glance.

When I was informed that I was going to demonstrate a presentation of the New Hire Orientation in front of the senior and junior leaders and even Boss Silver himself, I already thought to myself that I might not be able to live up to their expectations and find myself on the receiving end of a handful of criticisms. I have always been aware of how fast I talk whenever I do presentations, even way back when I was still a student, and until now, I have been working on resolving it, although to no avail with how things went. I ended up delivering the presentation in a manner where the audience that I was supposed to orient wouldn’t be able to retain the information that I was imparting to them because of how fast I was delivering it. This also meant that I failed to discuss the topics in an in-depth manner, rendering the whole session useless.

What followed the presentation was a bombardment of criticism that paved the way for improvement. Boss Silver’s wisdom on training made me reflect on how I should do presentations, especially in this context, and that was when I realized that one of the keys to delivering an effective orientation is being interactive with your audience. I should have thought of it as a friendly conversation rather than a one-sided lecture. I should have encouraged questions, initiated discussions and involved the audience in activities that helped them absorb the information.

By doing so, I not only ensure that they understand the material but also make them feel like valued members of the team. Interactivity fosters engagement, eases any nervousness, and creates a positive first impression of the organization. In regards to my delivery, I realized that if the orientation is too fast, employees may struggle to absorb important information, leading to confusion and frustration. The speed at which you deliver a new hire orientation is a vital consideration in ensuring that the process is engaging, effective, and adaptable.
I am truly thankful for all the lessons that were handed down to me, and I will surely make use of them to do better in fulfilling my role.
