𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 | 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗟𝗨 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗙 𝟭𝟱𝟳𝟴 🇵🇭

𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟱𝟳𝟴, Governor-General Francisco de Sande dispatched an expedition toward the Sulu Archipelago, marking the beginning of a conflict that would span three centuries. Led by Captain Esteban Rodriguez de Figueroa, the expedition was sent with the dual objective of establishing Spanish sovereignty over the region and enforcing the spread of the Catholic faith, fundamentally challenging the autonomy of the Sultanate of Sulu.

This move ignited a period of fierce resistance from the people of Sulu, who steadfastly defended their sovereignty, religion, and traditional maritime trade networks against the encroaching colonial power. The expedition transitioned what were once sporadic regional tensions into a formal, prolonged state of hostility, characterized by punitive Spanish military campaigns, the construction of fortresses, and retaliatory counter-raids by the Moro forces.

The expedition served as the catalyst for the long-standing Spanish-Moro wars, a complex chapter in our history that defined the socio-political landscape of the southern Philippines until the end of the Spanish colonial era. The Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Social Studies proudly participated in the 2nd COED Student Research Congress with the theme, “𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑰𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏”, held on May 5, 2026, at Cebu Technological University Main Campus.

The event served as a platform for student-researchers to showcase their dedication, critical thinking, and commitment to producing meaningful and innovative research studies that contribute to educational advancement and sustainable development.

𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟵𝟬𝟯, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲. Thousands of workers marched from Plaza Moriones in Tondo to Malacañang to demand better working conditions and assert their rights. It was organized by the Unión Obrera Democrática de Filipinas, the protesters marched with banners in a historic display of unity and defince during the American colonial administration.

The movement was led by 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐳, who succeeded Isabelo de los Reyes as the head of the labor union. Despite the presence of American cavalrymen and the threat of arrest for sedition and rebellion, the workers stood their ground, shouting "𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮!" This momentous event signaled the birth of the labor movement in the Philippines and established May 1 as a day of protest and struggle for the Filipino working class.
