the internet is saturated with AI contents.. and this adds noise to the already noisy web
Experts are warning of immimenent "AI model collapse’ as ChatGPT-Fueled content overwhelms the web.
And they note that, "leaning is going to be prohibitively expensive, probably impossible."
The rapid proliferation of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has sparked a new and unexpected crisis: the internet is becoming saturated with AI-generated content, and it's already undermining the future of AI development itself. Researchers warn that as AI models increasingly learn from data tainted by previous AI outputs, the quality and reliability of future models may spiral downward — a phenomenon known as "model collapse." The clean, human-created data that once formed the backbone of machine learning is being buried under layers of synthetic content, complicating efforts to train new models without recursive errors.
Maurice Chiodo from the University of Cambridge likens the dilemma to the demand for “low-background steel” — uncontaminated metal sourced from pre-nuclear era battleships. In AI terms, data from before 2022 is now seen as "clean," while post-2022 data is suspect. The problem is already affecting advanced AI systems like retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which depend on real-time web data that is increasingly polluted. Without enforceable regulations to label or filter AI-generated content, experts caution that the AI industry could stall itself by drowning in its own output.
