𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮?

People with Multiple Sclerosis also experience discrimination especially in the workplace because they are seen as a person with ability limitations (laborlawfirm.org), as this disease targets the nerve fibers causing one to have problems such as slurred speech, fatigue, dizziness, and partial or complete loss of vision (Mayo Clinic). However that is not the case, read through our featured story to receive a powerful message from a person living with multiple sclerosis.

For our 2nd ImmuNO-story, we have here the story of Marina and her experience living with autoimmune disease “Ｌｕｐｕｓ”

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮?

A study reported that there is higher incident of discrimination against African American women with systemic lupus erythematosus (a type of autoimmune disease), compared to the racism experienced by these women. In addition, increased racial discrimination among black women had also been link to those diagnosed with lupus (Chae et al., 2019).

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮?

According to research, Psoriasis, a noncommunicable autoimmune disease, has affected approximately 100 million people worldwide as of 2018. This disease is known to be closely associated with discrimination and stigmatization of those affected (WHO, 2018). This is due to the nature of this disease, people with psoriasis experience red, itchy scaly patches that are commonly seen in the knees, elbows, trunk, and scalp (MayoClinic.org). Apparently this discrimination stems from misconceptions about the disease. People’s knowledge about Psoriasis have been reported to be insufficient, they believed that Psoriasis was an infectious disease which is why social exclusion has been experienced by those who are affected (Özer & Yıldırım, 2020).

MS stands for Multiple Sclerosis...but it also stands for MADE STRONG! HA!

Multiple Sclerosis is a condition that involves the Central Nervous system, specifically the brain and the spinal cord. It occurs when the immune system severely attacks the myelinated axon that covers the nerve fibers responsible for transmission between the brain and the body. Thus, causing unpredictable symptoms such as numbness, tingling sensation, memory problems, vision problems, and paralysis. The source of this condition is still unknown and it can’t be predicted yet as the development occurs when something triggers the immune system to attack the brains and spinal cord.
