Humanity called and Arwen, Daniel and Dannah answered.
They had every reason to look the other way. They had classes to attend to, they had the sweltering sun at 1PM to contend with, they had the very human excuse of simply not wanting to be bothered by the troubles of a stranger.
But they chose the opposite.
They bothered. They minded. They acted.
Last April, these three students performed a heroic act for a total stranger. They did not just do the bare minimum, they stayed by the patientโs side until they reached the hospital, leaving only when they were certain she was safe and comfortable. Their actions echo the Gospel story of the Good Samaritan the man who did not just stop to help but took full responsibility for a stranger's recovery.
Arwen, Daniel, and Dannah are nursing students a step away from graduation. Perhaps they saw this as an opportunity to practice their craft. Perhaps kindness has simply become their second skin. Or perhaps, it was the value of interiority the rare ability to see themselves in others, and to see God in a stranger. That is something that cannot be taught in a classroom or measured on a grading sheet.
It is not easy to go out of our way for someone we do not know. It could have been any of us in that position but it was these three who took the high road.
For responding to the call of being humane and for reminding us what it truly means to care, actually care.
Let the good deeds of Arwen, Daniel and Dannah serve as more than just a story we applaud today in this simple commendation ceremony. Let them be a mirror for all of us.
In a world that often encourages us to mind our own business and keep moving Baste challenges us to
Not look away, when we see a need, let it 'bother' us whenever we see a stranger in distress and recognize our own humanity in them.
To the rest of the San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite community: you don't need a diploma or a grade to be a hero we simply need the courage to stop. May we all, especially our future healthcare leaders in the College of Nursing, carry this 'second skin' of goodness. Let us live out our mission by taking the high road whenever humanity calls.
In the spirit of our patron, St. Augustine, who taught us that 'our life and our death are with our neighbor,' let us pray that we never grow indifferent to the world around us.
May the example of Arwen, Daniel, and Dannah remind us that true Scientia, the knowledge we gain in these halls, is only made perfect when it is driven by Caritas the selfless love that reaches out to the those most in need.
Bravo Arwen!
Bravo Daniel!
Bravo Dannah!
Bravo Baste!
