DROWNING IN FAKE NEWS
Year twenty twenty-two (2022) is the eleventh year of Global Media and Information Literacy Week which will be commemorated from 24 to 31 of October 2022 with the theme "Nurturing trust: a media and information literacy imperative.”
In the rise of modernism, where the advent of technology is present to aid our daily needs, we have totally harnessed its power and used it for greater good in our everyday transactions, small or grand. Among the many splendored things that technology can offer is the access to media platforms. The knowledge, information and education it brings to people is indeed beneficial. It has been a tool for communication and our way to connect to the world around us.
Today, media has been a space for us users to get information in just a click of our fingertips. Yet, as users it is our optimum responsibility to sort out the information we share and read online, hence, as individuals, there is a need for us to be media and information literate for us to broaden our experiences with media and expand our understanding with what we see online.
Moreover, information overload is nothing but a common phenomenon in today’s world. People sometimes gets confused due to the bombardment of the information that comes from various multimedia platforms. The ability and knowledge to grasp if an information is truthful or a falsehood, if it is a fact or an opinion, if it is correct or erroneous becomes an ability that very few possess.
Fake news must be seen as a pressing concern that needs to be addressed by the government, especially the ministries of education. The weaponization of social media and the lack of critical thinking strikes a massive and strong blow on the level of media and information literacy of the Filipino people.
Hence, one way of being media and information literate is to do fact-checking. In this way, netizens can be able to save themselves from drowning in the deliberate, misleading, and biased fake news that has been weaponized for the sake of political propaganda.
We nurture trust as a media and information literacy imperative by not trusting everything that we see online. Evidently, media empowers people in so many ways, and as users, it is our mere obligation to ensure that we are using media for good.
