Reading has always been more than a school activity; it is the way to understand the world, shape ideas, and discover opportunities. Today, when Filipino learners face difficult challenges in education, reading stands as the bridge that can carry them towards a future full of hope.
Reading gives Filipinos the strongest wings, empowering learners to rise beyond learning gaps and move towards greateropportunities, confidence, and hope. With improvements and strengthened programs, Filipino students are steadily learning to navigate towards richer knowledge and brighter futures.
In fact, the latest 2024 Philippine Statistics Authority nationwide survey reported that 90% of Filipinos aged 5 years and older, approximately 93 million, already have basic literacy skills. Of Filipinos aged 10 to 64 years, 70.8% are now classified as functionally literate, meaning they can comprehend and apply written information in daily situations. These figures show that a strong majority of Filipinos possess real reading and comprehension abilities.
DepEd's push for literacy is already shining through in classrooms all over the country. Programs such as Catch-Up Fridays, National Reading Month, and Brigada Pagbasa are given increased vigor by the reforms of MATATAG, allowing students greater opportunities to engage with texts, practice comprehension, and build confidence. Teachers have noted that students who undergo guided reading sessions are more assured of their vocabularies, fluent in reading, and keener on independent reading. Early signs indicate that steady investment in reading yields dividends in the form of stronger overall learning.
Around the country, communities are riding this momentum. Local libraries, barangay reading centers, and volunteer storytelling groups expand the opportunities for kids to enjoy books outside school. Parents and youth organizations initiate reading camps and community reading hours, making reading a fun family activity. Grassroots efforts like these create an environment in which literacy can grow organically, enhancing comprehension, creativity, and curiosity among young readers.
Some say these gains are not yet enough to fully close the long-standing reading gaps. But while this is a valid concern, it actually underscores the importance of sustaining and expanding current programs. The progress now seen through national surveys, classroom performance, and in community engagement shows that the foundation is strong-what remains is building on such momentum. Continued commitment will guarantee that each learner takes advantage of the growth in literacy our nation is already recording.
Reading is a shared national project. Schools, parents, local leaders, and young people all play crucial roles in its nurturing. Let us continue to support literacy programs, invest in books and learning spaces, and encourage students to read each day. By deepening this culture of reading, we help every Filipino child cross the bridge toward a future bright with opportunity, confidence, and hope.
