Samar Trade School was its name upon establishment in 1912, serving as laboratory shop of the Samar Provincial High School. | SSU through University President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia and Engr. Raven Tabiongan, participated in the ASEAN Science Diplomats Assembly: 10th Founding Anniversary held on May 18–21, 2026, at the Acacia Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

The University joined the international gathering upon the invitation of the ASEAN Science Diplomats under the theme, “A Decade of Science Diplomacy: Bridging Divides, Inspiring Lives,” which brought together university presidents, executives, scientists, technology fellows, science diplomats, and thought leaders from ASEAN member countries and beyond.
The assembly was endorsed by the Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI) of the ASEAN Secretariat and organized in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), Environmental and Climate Change Research Institute (ECCRI), and other national and international organizations.

SSU’s participation highlighted the University’s continued commitment to internationalization, research collaboration, innovation, and global engagement in advancing science and technology for sustainable development and community service.

| SSU joins the Simultaneous Flag Raising Ceremony organized by the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office VIII (CHED RO VIII) last May 18, 2026, in celebration of the 32nd Founding Anniversary of the Commission on Higher Education and the 5th National Higher Education Day.

In response to the invitation issued to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across Eastern Visayas, SSU stands in solidarity with CHED RO VIII and fellow academic institutions in commemorating the milestones of higher education and reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and nation-building.

| USWAG Eastern Visayas Consortium convened its 1st Consortium Meeting on May 14, 2026, at the DOST Conference Room, Department of Science and Technology Regional Office VIII, Palo, Leyte, gathering leaders from State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), regional agencies, and innovation stakeholders across Eastern Visayas.

The activity was chaired by Dr. John Glenn D. Ocaña, Regional Director of DOST Regional Office VIII and Consortium Chair, together with Dr. Redentor S. Palencia, President of Samar State University and Consortium Co-Chair.

Among the SUC leaders and representatives present were Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes, President of Visayas State University; Dr. Victor C. Cañezo, President of Biliran Province State University and PASUC VIII President; Dr. Dennis C. De Paz, President of Eastern Visayas State University; Dr. Nigel L. Cornejo, President of Catbalogan City Community College; Atty. Geraldine B. Giray, Attorney IV of the University of Eastern Philippines; Dr. Felisa Gomba, Vice President for Research and Extension of Samar State University; Dr. Santiago T. Peña Jr., Vice President for Research and Innovation of Visayas State University; Dr. Roel Sabang, Vice President for Research of Palompon Institute of Technology; Dr. Vivian L. Moya, Director of the SSU Innovation Office; and Dr. Ervin L. Rodriguez, Director for Innovation of Northwest Samar State University.

Also in attendance were Ms. Marilyn O. Radam, Assistant Regional Director for Technical Operations of DOST VIII; Engr. Meilou C. Macabare, Provincial Director of DTI Samar; Mr. Mhardy C. Montejo, Provincial Science and Technology Director of DOST PSTO Leyte; and Ms. Claire P. Fernandez, Leyte Provincial Officer of DICT Region VIII.

Other guests present at the main table included Engr. Florentino L. Quiñones, Science Research Specialist II of DOST RO VIII; Mr. Joemar Taganna, Founder and CEO of Paytaca Inc.; and Hon. Rolito D. Manalo, Board Member of the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte.

The consortium meeting concluded with a renewed commitment among participating institutions and agencies to strengthen partnerships and advance innovation-driven development in Eastern Visayas under the shared vision of “Forging Bridges. Moving Forward.”

| The Department of Energy – Energy Utilization Management Bureau (DOE-EUMB) conducted a spot audit at Samar State University as part of its Government Energy Management Program (GEMP).

The activity aimed to assess the University’s compliance with energy efficiency and conservation policies implemented in government institutions. The audit included the evaluation of energy utilization practices, conservation measures, and compliance with prescribed energy management standards.

The spot audit forms part of the DOE’s continuing initiative to promote efficient energy use and strengthen sustainability practices among government agencies and state universities and colleges.

| SSU honored outstanding students in academic and non-academic fields during its 88th Recognition and Awards Day held on May 12, 2026, at the University Gymnasium.

With the theme, “Legacy in the Making: Honoring Students’ Commitment to Discipline, Leadership, and Academic Distinction,” the annual recognition rites celebrated students who excelled in academics, journalism, research, athletics, culture and the arts, and student leadership during Academic Year 2025–2026.

The ceremony was led by University President Dr. Redentor S. Palencia together with Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Engr. Ma. Lourdes Amante, and Vice President for Research and Extension Services Dr. Felisa Gomba, alongside faculty members, parents, and students from various colleges.

Serving as guest speaker, Atty. Duane Kendall Lim, Barangay and Community Affairs Officer of Catbalogan City, emphasized the importance of grit, diligence, integrity, and service among students as future nation-builders.

The recognition program featured the conferment of scholastic excellence awards and non-academic recognitions for achievements in leadership, athletics, research and development, internationalization programs, arts and cultural heritage, student organizations, and campus journalism.

Among the highlights of the ceremony were the recognition of student-athletes who represented the University in the Regional SCUAA, award-winning student researchers, and student leaders and organizations that contributed to campus life and student welfare.

| SSU proudly congratulates 266 successful passers in the March 2026 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (LEPT), whose achievement brought honor and distinction to the University.

The outstanding performance of the new licensed professional teachers reflects the dedication, perseverance, and academic excellence nurtured by the institution. This initiative encourages everyone to stay mindful during extreme heat conditions while promoting sustainable practices through reduced plastic use. Small actions like refilling can make a big difference—for you and for the planet. Aligned with SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
