To encourage the younger generation to pursue agriculture through modernized farming, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provided a Smart Greenhouse to Casiguran National High School (CNHS) on Thursday, January 29.

The automated greenhouse structure installed at CNHS is a pioneer design in Region III, making seedling production easier and more efficient for both learners and teachers in Agricultural Crops Production.

โ€œOur department aims to increase the number of young farmers in the country, as the farming population is aging due to the notion that agriculture involves constant hard labor. We make this possible by developing smart agriculture technologies that appeal to the modern generation, making farming more efficient and innovative,โ€ said Maria Ana Espiritu, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST Aurora, during the turnover ceremony.

She challenged teachers and learners to develop a concrete plan of action to ensure that the smart greenhouse remains sustainable and beneficial to both the school and the community.

Espiritu also emphasized that DOST, in collaboration with external partners, continuously develops climate-smart agricultural technologies designed to produce quality products and seedlings.

The provision of farming facilities to schools nationwide is part of DOSTโ€™s project โ€œCultivate to Educate,โ€ which aims to raise awareness and advocate food security for both present and future generations.

Agricultural Engineer Roan F. Beronilla, proprietor of MSAE Construction Services, explained in detail the design and installation of the greenhouse.

The structure is made of agriculture-friendly materials to ensure adaptability to the weather conditions and location of the facility.

Beronilla assured that the greenhouse can withstand unpredictable weather conditions such as heavy rains and typhoons, which Casiguran often experiences.

The three-meter-high greenhouse is an off-grid, standalone facility powered by a solar energy system that automatically waters seedlings and maintains relative humidity. It can accommodate 48 to 60 seedling trays, depending on the crop type.

Although the system operates automatically, Beronilla emphasized the need for regular monitoring to ensure that the irrigation system functions properly and prevents the plants from drying out.

She added that following proper procedures and maintenance will ensure the production of high-quality seedlings.

โ€œTo prevent pest infestation, viruses, or w**d growth, strict disinfection procedures must be observed, such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and washing footwear in a chlorine solution,โ€ she stated.

On behalf of Education Program Supervisor of TVE/TLE, Dr. Jonalyn O. Calado, Public Schools District Supervisor of Casiguran, Irene H. Llave, expressed gratitude to DOST for responding to requests related to modern and high-end teaching facilities.

Dr. Edgar E. Buenaventura, the school principal of CNHS, also conveyed his appreciation for DOSTโ€™s continued support to the Department of Education, especially to schools with Technology and Livelihood Education as a flagship program.

โ€œThis milestone for CNHS is a step toward the meaningful acquisition of knowledge and skills in farming through innovation,โ€ he emphasized.

During the turnover ceremony, TVE Coordinator, Dr. Elizabeth C. Lota, formally accepted the responsibility of managing the smart greenhouse.

She committed to keeping the facility sustainable and potentially profitable in collaboration with TVE teachers, learners, and other stakeholders.

CNHS is one of the two beneficiaries of the Smart Greenhouse Project in Aurora Province, alongside Maria Aurora National High School.
