April 15, 2024- The College of Engineering and Architecture with COEASC Golden Z Club, conducted the Gender and Development (GAD) Seminar with the theme, โ€œEmbracing Diversity: Redefining Gender Norms, Disrupting S*x Roles, and Empowering through HIV Awareness.โ€

Atty. Mary Marjorie P. Martin-Chan, the first Resource Speaker and the Central Tuguegarao Zonta Club President, opened her talk by differentiating gender and s*x through interactive activity with the COEAns. She then proceeded with an eye-opener message by sharing how gender stereotyping can destroy someoneโ€™s confidence and how it can rob us of getting big opportunities to do great things.

โ€œSo thatโ€™s the problem with stereotypes. We are not ourselves because we are limited by what the community tells us and how we act.โ€ she highlighted. With that, she shared some wise tips on how we can start breaking gender stereotyping: walk the talk, point it out, speak up, teach boys home economics, and switch gender roles in your daily life.

โ€œI am not the best person to do household chores but I can do better in all other things. So itโ€™s now time for us to accept that maybe hindi tayo dapat magsettle sa kung ano lang โ€˜yong alam natin.โ€

โ€œGender sensitivity is just about accepting and tolerating differences. Tanggapin na magkakaiba tayong lahat at ang expression natin ay magkakaiba [rin]. [Our] preferences and capacities ay magkakaiba. Accepting differencesโ€, she said on summarizing what gender sensitivity is. โ€œThe aim of gender sensitization is to make people aware of the power relations between men and women in society and to understand the importance of affording women and men equal opportunities and treatmentโ€, she added.

We should try to accept and live our lives with the differences because, after all, we all are born different from others. Improving our attitude and being a gender-sensitive individual will surely make COEA a more nurturing and accepting community than before.

Dr. Janet M. Ibay MPH, a medical officer, provided valuable insights to the students of the College of Engineering and Architecture regarding HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Ibay discussed the difference between HIV and AIDS, emphasizing their causes and modes of transmission. She explained that HIV is transmitted through unprotected s*x (vaginal/anal), as well as through conception, childbirth, and breastfeeding. The virus is carried in four body fluids: blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk.

HIV weakens the immune system, which may ultimately lead to death, as it has no cure. However, antiretroviral drugs (ARV) have been developed to help prolong the lifespan of infected individuals.

Dr. Janet encouraged the students to avoid contracting HIV through abstinence, condom use, and faithfulness to their partners. She emphasized the importance of getting tested after engaging in unprotected s*x, which after the seminar is offered.

She has also debunked common misleading information on the transmission of HIV, such as getting infected from a toilet seat, swimming pool, or through contact with the body fluid of someone who is infected. Dr. Ibay clarified that a person can only be at risk if they engage in unprotected s*x.

It is important to take this matter seriously, as HIV cannot be detected in its early stages, and typically the symptoms of AIDS manifest between 5 to 10 years after infection.

Be s*xually responsible. Protect yourself, protect your partner.

Deep down in me, my dream is not only to become the subject of your every poem and the muse to your every painting but I also do dream to be by your side in this lifetime.

I sighed once again when this time, you're laughing with your heart.. I absentmindedly stopped scribbling on my notebook and just stared at you like a painting in a museum. What have you done to me Noeverick. This very scene is far from my personality. I am not expecting this to happen at all. Not in every chance. I have figured out myself long ago. I do not want to associate myself with anyone especially building a relationship together. I swear to myself that I would not fall for anyone.

I have seen my parents. I have witnessed what they call it a love then just one day with my own two eyes, I watched how they tragically separated. It was a cruel situation. They loved each other deeply and then one morning I woke up, I do not even know my parents anymore. They are not the same person anymore. It's like there is a total stranger residing in them. My heart aches every time. I'm all by myself now. And I do not even believe in love since then.

But why, why am I now laughing together with this man, Noeverick. Planning a future together, with his pencil in his hand, he's sketching our dream house together. My portraits are scattered in this picnic blanket. We are here on top of a mountain beneath a very huge tree. And this time, he's now writing a poem that's all about me. I would fall every time he did this kind of stuff. I am a fool not to love a man like him. The reason why all my principles in life broke like a stick of a match.

But there's no such thing like a forever once again. Like the fire on a matchstick, you burned my heart into ashes. I should have known better. Just a fleeting moment of happiness and everything else was corrupted from me once again. How much more should I grieve? My heart aches not for my parents anymore but this time, my heart aches for myself. I pitied myself for a very long time but I learned now to convert my feelings into something else. When it aches, it tells you a story.

I learned to love my own heartaches and you teach me to appreciate and love poems and paintings even more.

Even if you were cruel like both of my parents, you taught me how to fill every pages of my notebooks with unbelievably rhyming words I'm not familiar with until I met you.. until you broke me.

You taught me how to stroke a paintbrush on a canvas and now my room is filled with pieces of my broken self, my emotions, my heartaches, and my soul.

It's been four years since then and last two years ago, I learned that one of your painting have been made into liking of the musuem I am working at. They bought your piece, and now, here I am again sitting and burning my almost 2 hours of the day just to stare and contemplate at your piece. When some random stranger pops up beside me.

"Mind if I'll just stand here?"

I absentmindedly nod without looking at the man. I heard he said "Thanks." I'm still too engrossed watching the painting to even pay a glance. But I shivered and became petrified when I realized who it was. Instead of feeling the presence of a stranger, I felt a familiar one. Almost, almost I couldn't familiarize anymore.

And before I even had a chance to turn my head and face the man, I heard him talk again.

"How are you Seraiah.." I blink.. and blink.. and blink.. I can't believe what I'm seeing right now. Am I being haunted? This is the artist behind this piece.

"Noeverick.." Before I even had a chance to utter some words.. I saw a woman approaching carrying in her arms a boy around three-four years old.

"Hey Rick.." she said softly.

In the persona of that little boy, I see nothing but a baby version of you. I felt my whole body sank. My shoulder declared its defeat. All the little expectations a while ago vanished like a flash.

You are once and unfortunately still my muse to my every paintings and my subject to my every poem, but now, you found a person who will paint your life with all the colors of the world, a person who will make your life a real life poetry in every chance she could.

Stoned in the Philippine history, this day marks the 38th year of remembering EDSA Revolution; how the Filipino people successfully ousted the dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. through collective 4-day bloodless protests.

People Power Revolution (EDSA Revolution) started on February 22, 1986 and lasted until its fourth day - February 25, when the oppressive regime of Marcos Sr. fell into surrender. The blurring acknowledgement of the current administration may lead Marcos' loyalists to invalidate the truth of this historic win, nevertheless, it happened.

EDSA Revolution was a massive force of millions of Filipino people who grew sick and despiteful of the greed and violence perpetuated by the dictator - Marcos Sr. in his position. It was the key moment of democracy being in good use. Those people who marched in bravery against the military forces did not only fight for themselves, but for the common good.

Now that democracy is abused by those who have influence and power, remembering and learning from the EDSA Revolution is more crucial. Democracy is a freedom that coexists with responsibilities to the country. Like the people of EDSA 1986, our loyalty must not adhere to politicians or political colors. Rather, it must seek for the good of our country and our countrymen.

February 25, 2024 is EDSA PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION DAY. Do not let them tell you otherwise.

There's just times in our lives when we feel like we're somehow lost in a bit. In the park when I was seven, during mall walks when mom and dad deliberately leave me to see how I would react, and even when we're playing hide and seek in the woods and I always end up bawling my eyes calling my mothers name. It was a moment 'till it lasted, a record of how it really is back then. Then time passed by like a spark of a fire. Life got us here. Shaking in fear, making moments last until we can, blankly waiting for something to come. I suppose I have to thank my mom at times like this. Because of how I was always the one seeking in hide and seek, I've learned to look for the fireflies in the dark forest of life. As they taught me to stand up every time I fell, I have also made it to this point where I could just juggle myself back to work after a long breakdown. Even when I'm left with no one else at the peak of my loneliness, I am still grateful that they have taught me how to survive alone.

But sometimes, I wish you never left mom. I wish you didn't hide forever just to leave me waiting in that crossroads. I wish dad didn't have to hide his tears while you're silently hiding from us. I wish you didn't teach me how to tend for myself so that I can still crawl to you with your warmth and open arms, mom. I just wish you're still here while I'm currently at my highest. I wish to cry on your shoulders, mom.

Even if it's just for a bit, let me be your child once again.

If only for a moment, let me just play with you once again, mom.
