Bicol schools directed to adopt modular distance learning in the event of localized class suspension
Legazpi City, Albay, January 18, 2023 - The Department of Education Bicol directed Schools Division Offices (SDOs) in the Region to adjust learning modality and to adopt modular distance learning in the event of localized class suspension brought about by various disruptions such as typhoon, flooding, and torrential rains.
In a recent memorandum, DepEd Bicol Director Gilbert Sadsad reiterated the provision indicated in DepEd Order no. 37 or the Guidelines on the Cancellation and Suspension of Classes and Work in Schools in the Event of Natural Disasters, Power Outages/ Power Interruptions, and other Calamities, requiring schools to adjust learning modality in the event of cancelled or suspended classes. He said that modular distance learning, performance task, projects or other similar activities shall be implemented to ensure that learning competencies and objectives are met by students. Further, Director Sadsad also instructed SDOs to distribute available Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) to be utilized by schools when classes have been declared suspended.
The issuance of additional guidelines on the adjustment of learning delivery during suspension of classes is aimed at ensuring learning continuity and mitigate learning loss amid the series of cancellation of classes brought about by torrential rains and other weather systems in the Region.
Director Sadsad further reminded schools to ensure that SLMs are properly used, cared for, safeguarded from natural and human elements, and recorded.
โThe SLMs are provided to teachers and students for free and are intended to be used for at least 5 years. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every learner, teacher, and school head to exert effort to protect the learning resources from damage or loss to prolong its lifespan. โhe said.
