The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) joins the global observance of Earth Hour 2026 on March 28, 2026, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., encouraging the public to turn off non-essential lights and take simple actions to help protect the environment. This is a globally recognized initiative that supports efforts to address climate change and strengthen community awareness on sustainability and disaster resilience.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) joins the global observance of Earth Hour 2026 today, March 28, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., encouraging the public to switch off non-essential lights and adopt simple actions to help protect the environment.

In the rugged forests of Mt. Hilong-Hilong in Surigao del Norte, a rare and hopeful moment was captured on camera — the Vulnerable Mindanao Bleeding-heart, quietly walking the forest floor in December 2025, with another pair recorded in January 2026.

These sightings are more than proof of presence; they are signs that parts of this forest are still alive, still intact, and still able to shelter threatened wildlife despite growing pressures. This milestone is part of the DENR-UNDP/GEF BD Corridor Project, working to protect biodiversity corridors, conserve threatened species, and support communities who help keep these forests standing.

A juvenile reef shark was discovered dead off Sta. Cruz Island in Zamboanga City, its head tragically entangled in a disposable diaper, drawing attention to the escalating impact of marine pollution. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Zamboanga Peninsula has launched an investigation to determine where the entanglement occurred and whether currents carried the shark into Philippine waters. Local diver Harvey Yap, who shared photos of the deceased shark, described the incident as deeply distressing, noting that he had only seen juvenile reef sharks in the area twice before in his 15 years of diving.

This heartbreaking case underscores the severe consequences of improper waste disposal, as plastics, diapers, and ropes increasingly threaten marine wildlife and coral reef ecosystems. Environmental authorities and advocates stress the urgent need for stronger waste management systems, increased public awareness, and collective action to prevent further harm. Protecting marine habitats is essential to safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring the survival of species that are already vulnerable due to human activity.
