โ€Ž
โ€ŽTo formally start the program, Dr. Leila Ravana delivered her opening remarks. She also welcomed the students who attended the forum and acknowledged their presence as a sign of support for the event, followed by Ma'am Mayen Elacion's short introduction to the guest speaker.
โ€Ž
โ€Žโ€œAs we celebrate the National Women's Month... We are reminded of the strength, wisdom, and leadership that Filipinas embody in the past and present,โ€ Ma'am Mayen Elacion started, highlighting the significant contributions of women in shaping our communities and inspiring future generations.
โ€Ž
โ€Žโ€œIt is my honor to introduce a woman who truly reflects her qualities through her dedication to her education, service, and family, โ€ she also said, highlighting how Maโ€™am Jocelyn M***a Paz has inspired others through her achievements and commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽMaโ€™am Paz then spoke about the Magna Carta for Women, outlining its role in promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of Filipino women. She also highlighted how understanding and upholding these rights empowers women to participate fully in society and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
โ€Ž
โ€Žโ€œGinawa nila ang Magna Carta for Women to recognize the rise of womenโ€”the inherent right of women. At ang ibig sabihin ng inherent ay it's from birth. Parang human rights lang natin,โ€ she explained, emphasizing that every woman is entitled to equal opportunities, protection, and respect in all aspects of life. She also encouraged the students to understand these rights and to advocate for gender equality in their own communities.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽShe also discussed various laws that removed discrimination. These laws didn't just protect women but also encouraged fair treatment for everyone regardless of their gender. She also mentioned the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which was created to eliminate discrimination against women in all matters.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe Magna Carta for Women was implemented by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo under Republic Act 9710 of 2009, which serves as a comprehensive womenโ€™s rights law in the Philippines. It aims to eliminate discrimination, ensure equal opportunities, and protect the welfare of women in all aspects of society.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽAfter that, she proceeded to the second topic, which is the Safe Spaces Act (Bawal Bastos Act), explaining its purpose in protecting individuals from sexual harassment in both physical and online spaces. She highlighted key provisions of the law, shared real-life scenarios, and emphasized the importance of respect and proper behavior in promoting a safe environment for everyone.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe Safe Spaces Act or Bawal Bastos Law is under Republic Act 11313 and was signed in 2019 by former President Rodrigo Duterte and was authored by Senator Risa Hontiveros. It penalizes gender-based sexual harassment in public areas, workplaces, schools, and online platforms. The law addresses behaviors such as catcalling, misogynistic remarks, unwanted sexual advances, leering, and repeated unsolicited comments.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe program concluded with the awarding of certificates to the guest speaker and students, recognizing their active participation and contribution to the forum. The program ended with expressions of gratitude to everyone involved, highlighting the importance of applying the lessons learned about womenโ€™s rights and gender equality in daily life.

โ€Ž
