The journey of science facts also leads us to one of our favourite fruits—the banana. Though not in the most delicious way!

Radioactive materials can be dangerous, but the level of danger depends on the type and amount of exposure. In this case, bananas have naturally high levels of potassium, and a small fraction of that potassium is radioactive. Consuming one banana delivers a total dose of about 0.01 millirem (0.1 microsieverts) of radiation, a very small amount. Bananas do not pose a radiation hazard when eaten normally, their natural radioactivity is extremely low compared to everyday background radiation from the environment. It is still safe to eat bananas so there is no need to worry!
