For Dr. Jelaine L. Gan, her journey as a biologist began with experiences she had as a student at Philippine Cultural College.

A PCC Batch 2013 alumna, Dr. Jelaine is now an Associate Professor at the Institute of Biology, UP Diliman, where she teaches ecology and conducts research on the environment and birds. Looking back, she says she did not always have a clear idea of what she wanted to become. Her interest in the environment developed naturally through the things she learned and explored while in school.

What stayed with her most was PCC’s holistic approach to learning. Beyond her regular classes, she took part in activities such as the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and sports events. These experiences helped her develop independence, confidence, and character. Her research subject in high school also introduced her to the scientific method and critical thinking, which eventually became part of her work as a scientist and educator.

She also remembers the teachers who challenged her to prepare, listen carefully, and think through difficult questions. Years later, the lessons she learned from them continue to influence the way she teaches her own students.

“PCC gave me a solid academic foundation, but more importantly, it gave me the freedom to explore, the confidence to challenge myself, and the character to face the real world.”

For Dr. Jelaine, education was not only about preparing for the next level of school. It was also about discovering what interests you, trying new things, and developing the confidence to face what comes next.

and upon the recommendation of NDRRMC, Caloocan City Mayor Along Malapitan announced the suspension of onsite classes in all levels tomorrow (August 19, 2026).

All classes will shift to asynchronous mode. Please monitor the assigned tasks given by the teachers. STAY SAFE and take precautionary measures.
