Phi Kappa Chapter History
Fraternities and sororities existed couple of decades ago in Calbayog City. Almost all of them were claiming as the most successful fraternities and sororities and will never succumb into non-existence. Managing an organization like fraternity or sorority is not an easy job, and therefore was proven difficult after many years of existence. Most of them became hopeless, considering that the leaders of these kinds of organizations are all college students. Piles of problems were encountered due to the lack of proper management skills, and the conflict of time regarding on their different academic subjects. Some of them declined, few of them survived.
Moreover, after the first decade of fraternity competition, the violence started to occur as a result of a passive system of most fraternities and sororities. The residents of the city strongly condemned the aggravating situation and successfully won back peace in a short period oftime. The members of the different fraternities and sororities realized that they must do something good before its to late to gain back the trust and confidence of the Calbayognons that was lost during the time of fraternity violence manifestations.
The Phi Kappa Chapter of GAMMA EPSILON FRATERNITY & GAMMA LAMBDA EPSILON SORORITY was organized on the 17th of May, year 2001, to prove that there are legitimate fraternities and sororities with pure and noble intentions. From the City of Cebu, Dr.Timothy Paul E. Villanueva, Zeta Phi Chapter member, brought the idea to the college students of Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology (TTMIST), and initiated the pioneering batch. All of them actively shared their resources and talents unconditionally in preparation for the next recruitment and initiation activities of the group. Unanymous decision was raised after a series of meetings with regards to the recruitment strategy of the group, which is to conduct a dental mission activity. The decision was sooner realized, after weeks of the first initiation activity. The first dental mission was held at Brgy. Migara, Calbayog City, which led to the formal introduction of the group to the community.
AMAZED --- the first reaction of the Calbayognons to the activity conducted by the group with the help of the city government thru the City Health Office of Calbayog. A lot of positive statements came out from the different individuals in Calbayog City, until the local government on January of 2002 formally recognized the group during the second major project of Phi Kappa Chapter which was the Medical-Dental Mission Project, held at the Public Elementary School of Brgy. Naga, and also successfully catered some residents from Brgy. Cogon which is just adjacent to Brgy. Naga, in coordination with the City Health Office and in cooperation with the CARE 5 or the Calbayog Amateur Radio Enthusiasts District 5.
The group started to gain more friends, more awards, more recognitions, and more members. Aside from that, the group also made significant activities in the campus of TTMIST, which is the main nest of Phi Kappa Chapter, through donating affordable school materials and medical activities as well.
During the third major activity of the group, which was the blood-letting activity, the city government awarded the group as a regular partner in service. The proud members of Phi Kappa Chapter remained down to earth, and never use their popularity to overpower of something; instead, they devote their time planning for another major activities, searching for new ideas for the group to continuously help our fellowmen.
The members of this chapter believe in the saying that "the service we render to others is really the rent we pay for our room on the earth.β
